WRONG!! After Kingdom Hearts 1, you should play Chain of Memories! It is actually really important and leads right into Kingdom Hearts 2! 358/2 Days is really important as well, but I played it after 2 and it meant so much more to me after the events of what happened in KH2. Then, next up is Recoded. I didn’t like this game, but the story does help lead and mentions the characters from Birth By Sleep, so Birth by Sleep is after that. Followed by Drop Dream Distance, and finally Birth By Sleep .2 Epilogue. This guy is not an expert. Every game (with maybe the exception being Recoded), is quite important to understanding the entire story of Kingdom Hearts. If you skip any of the "spin-offs", this is where people are confused by the story.

I got Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts 2.8 prologue and Kingdom Hearts 3 in one bundle. I never really got into the franchise but decided it’s about time with Kingdom Hearts 3.

Okay. Here’s the what you need to play (in order also)
    Kingdom Hearts 1.5
    Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories
    Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
    Kingdom Hearts 2.5
    Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
    Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance

If you play all these you won’t be confused when you play Kingdom Hearts 3. You can skip Chain of Memories but you’ll get a little confused. 358/2 days is very important for learning about the Antagonists. 1.5+2.5 are both on PS3 and PS4. They are bundled together. It also includes Chain of memories, 358/2 days (In movie form; No gameplay), Re: Coded, and finally Birth by sleep. 2.8 has Dream Drop Distance and of course Kingdom Hearts 2.8

Side games are definitely needed to understand who the heck Roxas is and why in the world Sora slept in a bulb.

    July 13, 2022 @ 11:26 pm

Sure, skip Chain of Memories. I’m sure you’ll know who Organization XIII is and why there are only 9 members and not 13. I’m sure you’ll just know what happened to literally every character in KH1. The only ones you CAN skip is 358/2 Days and MAYBE Recoded, the only reason to play Recoded is to know what Maleficent’s goal in KH3 is.

2.8 isn’t worth the money. The Back Cover cinematic movie and BBS A Fragmentary Passage are short enough to watch on YouTube. Dream Drop Distance was originally on the 3ds, so if you have a 3ds and don’t want to drop a fortune on 2.8, I recommend playing it. However, there is a drop in graphics quality compared to the remastered version on the PS4, but that didn’t really bother me, I just like being caught up on the series and still have money for KH3 lmao

Do not listen to this man. Play every game in the order they were released and you will be fine. Don’t skip any game, especially not Chain of Memories or Dream Drop Distance. There are no real Spin-Off Titles. Everything is important. The best way to play the games is, like he said, the PS4 Collections, but you may want to play the DS Version of 358/2 Days. The story comes across a lot better if you play the game. Don’t let yourself get confused. It’s really not as complicated as a lot of people are claiming it to be.

Expert? Heh, I don’t think so. Here’s how to actually play the series.

Buy Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 and Kingdom Hearts 2.8. They’re on PS4.

    Play in this order

    KH1
    Chain of Memories
    KH2
    358/2 Days
    Birth by Sleep
    Re:Coded

Okay, but guys, help. I am playing 1,5 for the first time. Constantly stuck and cant figure out where to go, what to do or how to do it. Also the combat is super repetitive as enemies keep respawning when I am walking back and forth. Am I supposed to wander aimlessly for an hour before finding every next step? I really want to give this a chance!

    July 13, 2022 @ 11:46 pm

Just do what I did, skip COM and just watch the entire game "movie" on youtube, that way you skip arguably the worst game in the series (gameplay wise) and still understand the story

  36. Local Hobo
    July 13, 2022 @ 11:49 pm

HOLD UP you SHOULD PLAY Kingdom hearts re:chain of memories then KH2

    EDIT:
I think you’re supposed to watch the 356/2 days movie before KH2

  37. Joe A
    July 13, 2022 @ 11:50 pm

This video is grossly wrong. You need to play all games to understand the plot. There aren’t any "spinoffs". You can call them side games but they are all hugely relevant to the plot. Your best bet is playing them all in RELEASE order. If you go straight into KH2 without playing Chain of Memories you will be so confused. I don’t want to sound harsh but these people clearly don’t know the series and/or are extremely casual players. Even the mobile game has important plot points but I would recommend watching some Youtube videos instead of playing the game if you don’t want to invest in it

Every title that ISN’T Re:Coded is important to the overall. You can’t just play 1, and 2, BBS, and then skip Re:CoM and 358/2 days, you miss the biggest story of the lot, and 3D is important for 3, as is 0.2, how dare you suggest that they aren’t important!!

    Playing Birth By Sleep at the moment. Got to the end of Ventus’s story, I can’t beat Vanitas. I get the point where he destroys the platform and we fly up & you have to fill the command bar. I can’t fill it, it drops too quickly and he ends up killing me. ;-;

I think that the re:chain of memories is pretty important. For example, when I was younger I went from Kingdom Hearts 1 to Kingdom Hearts 2 and I didn’t understand most of the stuff in the beginning. So, if you really want to understand all the details in the game you need to play them all (or watch the cutscenes at least).

  46. moshenmario
    July 14, 2022 @ 12:00 am

You most certainly do need to play Chain of Memories. I jumped from KH 1 right into KH 2 and I was so confused as to why I wasn’t playing as Sora and why he was asleep. And the intro cinematic also confused me because it shows what happened in Castle Oblivion and I was totally lost

  47. Pasha Solonin

1:35 What about Chain Of Memories? It acts as a bridge between Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2.

"After Kingdom Hearts 1 go to Kingdom Hearts 2."
Excuse me what. People, the spin-offs are 100% necessary to understand the whole story. Play them.
Here’s the order you should play them in (with 1.5+2.5 and 2.8 on PS4):
    1. Kingdom Hearts 1
    2. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
    3. Kingdom Hearts 2
    4. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
    5. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
    6. Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded
    7. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
    8. Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover
    9. Kingdom Hearts Unchained X/Union X (mobile game)
    10. Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage

Writing all of this out has made me fully realize just how ridiculous Kingdom Hearts naming conventions are.
