i can only hope someone will buy this franchise in 20 years and reboot it with a shonen style story where each floor is 2-3 episodes minimum and never exit the original world

I only recently watched the show and I can say that it’s not just rose tinted glasses. The first part is genuinely good. It just really starts to fall off towards the end of that season.

It was quite good, and It brought about the first Game in which my little brother deleted 5 months of grinding in 2 seconds.

I loved the first season, and like some other comments I did defensed the first half of the first season… after it turned into a anime full of just r*pe scenes. I tried to watch the 3rd and forth seasons but couldnt finish them. They sucked. I have no clue why they needed so much random crap and r*pe scenes.

Its funny i watched SAO with my girlfreind at the time when it came out. And we enjoyed it her more than me but we wnt to a large anime convetion that year and i could tell you how many kirito and Asana cosplays there were.

I know he’s working on progressive but I do wonder if he’ll ever be interested in rewriting the series. SAO still to this day prints money, and I legitimately wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted to make another anime after they complete this story.

Someone had to fucking say it, man, this video was cathartic. I’ve been so used to it getting memed to hell for years as the worst anime ever that I never got a chance to talk about how much I loved it at one point. Granted, I was 13 or 14 and it was the second anime I’d ever watched (excluding Pokemon and shit) after Death Note, but there was something about it that I still haven’t really felt since and this video described it so well. That feeling of wanting to just jump into this fantasy world and vicariously live another life. The inexplicably nostalgic, welcoming familiarity of the world and places in it, the sounds, the music, it all really captured your heart back then, as a young kid who spent way too much fucking time inside videogames. Even though I know it’s shit story and writing-wise now, I still get a bit emotional remembering the way it first made me feel when I’d never seen anything like it back then.

What the fuck, I did not realize the beginnings of the show. That explains so god damn much. Might go a bit less hard on it from now on lmao.

SAO suffered from “it’s popular, so we need to put it under the biggest microscope we can find” syndrome. Yeah, it’s got holes. But not everything is about having a perfect story. Sometimes the feel, atmosphere, characters, etc can carry a show.

Say what you want about sword art online but I think we can all agree that SAO abridged in an absolute masterpiece

Sao has a bad reputation (at least in my opinion) of having banger first halves of the season and the other being complete shit. Best example right now is season two-like what the hell?! Hopefully progressive (the movie not the insurance) will fix all my problems.👌

Dude this was seriously eye opening. I gained so much respect for Kawahara, it must be so hard to have your first go at a novel be your career defining piece of work. Even though his writing was not good, his imagination and world building were.

One thing that personally got me hooked on anime is the abridged version of sao, personally i believe it retells the plot of sao without it being too cheesy and adds alot of comedy to it. It also adds personality to each character further than the base anime

The first time I’ve heard of SAO, I’ve heard time and time again that it’s a great anime (mind you, I’ve never seen reviews of SAO being crap).

I don’t know why I didn’t give it a chance back then. I think I did but then I got distracted and dropped the anime without even watching the 1st episode to its entirety. All this time I thought I was missing out but it really was that bad?

I get and agree with most of the criticisms but the nerve gear issue doesn’t make sense like bruh they were sucked into a fuckin rpg. What realisticness do u want from a helmet that can do that, it’s like saying I wanna know the science of magic ppl would be like tf

SAO isn’t a bad anime, it is perfectly okay. In fact, it is better than minimum 90% of all anime, these anime are just lesser known.

Also, the first part of Alicization was just so insanely good, which made SAO into one my favorites actually.

And criticism is good, when done right. Gigguk for example shows both positive and negative aspects and explains them. On the other hand, Mothers Basement is basically just milking it and saying: SAO bad

For me it was the concept of an RPG becoming my life and goal. Like you put it, it’s the possibilities that really hooked me. The first arc was amazing but by the end I felt sorta cheated, it was amazing but why end it so abruptly? Then the second arc came and honestly I fell off of it. Watched the gun part a while later just cause I wanted to see where it was going. But then the Alice arc came and somehow I got hooked. Was it the new art style? Ehh, kind of? Was the story better? Ehh kind of? We’re the fights cooler? No. Well, at the end kind of, but then you get the big sword mecha and I was left thinking what the hell is this? The ending though with the IRL political and ethical usage of AI was interesting. While the concept isn’t entirely new, I just really got into it and died to see how it would turn, cause honestly, this shit could happen in my lifetime. And the possibilities this tech can bring both good and bad, really gets one thinking about the controversy values we might have to settle

Dude I agree 100% and it nice to see someone touch on the fondness we all had of season 1. One thing I don’t hear talked about much is the fucking soundtrack. I still listen to it how many years later? It gives me chills and this feeling of nostalgia.. like I’m actually in a RPG town just hoping to survive another day. Some serious .hack//sign vibes with the violins 🙂

I think the story is eh, and I can’t argue that. But it was such an immersive world. I don’t care what anyone says, everyone really vibed with Kirito. The art style, the fights, and even the world that was built were all just perfect to get absorbed into.

SAO made me think playing MMORPGs would be fun. I tried WOW because of this show. I bought a VR headset because of this show. I think it’s wildly abused for no reason.

I had no idea Accel World came before SAO either, even tho I watched them in reverse of release.

I think Its funny how everyone Takes the SWE Adaptation as Just another huge dump on SAO, when in reality you have to Love this Show immensely to even Go and Put that much effort into creating an entirely new Plot for the whole Thing.
Meaning to say: people also Like to Just See their own opinion reflected in something else. I Feel this is one of the Bigger reasons why Its so popular to hate on SAO nowadays.

  49. Crysi Crysis
    April 16, 2022 @ 7:12 am

    SAO season one was fantastic.

GGO was acceptable, if you squinted.

It’s not fantastic, looking back on it. But it’s alright. It’s okay enough, and sometimes that’s all a show needs to be.

He’s not a writer, but the passion for the gaming side of it works well enough that better writers can parody it. SAO Abridged? Absolute banger, takes everything great about the original, makes the story better, and is the best version of the show by far.
