Nick, I absolutely LOVED this movie, especially the score. I couldn’t wait to show it to two of my closest friends. The moment the three disembodied heads appeared, they were out; too weird for them. Me? I absolutely adore this movie.

The fact that chihiro forgets everything at the end but her friends remember and will meet her again is the strongest part, as it’s meant to subconsciously question if you’ve also had adventures with friends you’ve forgotten, who are waiting for your return.

Fun fact: they didn’t have a set script when they started, Miyazaki wrote the movie as it was being animated, and it definitely shows in the best way possible!

Do you know the sad backstory behind the „bath house“ storyline?? The bath house is a metaphor for a s€x house, which were called „bathing houses“ back then in this country. The little girl was taking to work at a „bath house“, that’s why there’s only all this old man going there to ne „washed“ and only young beautiful women to wash them….it’s about child s€x trafficking

This is not one the best animes. It’s one of the best films period, animation or not. I love how you’re given so little information about this spirt world. You’re learning as you go just like the main character and I think that’s the key to "his" films. (Too lazy to look up how to spell the directors name. He’s fantastic though.).

Aww, I loved your reactions! I saw this movie when I was a kid, at that age where fairytale logic just kind of makes sense to you, so I didn’t have much notion of what was surprising about the story’s twists and turns. Seeing your shock and intrigue at the different parts of the story gave me a new perspective on it. Thank you! 🙂

The whole movie is a metaphor for young prostitution. Chihiro sees her parents as greedy pigs who sold her in to prostitution. They usually change your name to so people can’t find you. No Face represents an older man who wants to buy Chihiro and offers her lots of things to make her like him, but in the end, she still loves a much younger boy instead. Its all really sick and twisted but good.

Was this your first Hayao Miyazaki movie? I knew you were in for a wild ride 😛 I enjoyed your reaction so much! Once you discover Miyazaki’s works there’s no going back; his films are unlike any other, he is the best of the best! Paired with the music of Joe Hisashi – one of the best ever film composers, their collaboration is legendary – his films are masterpieces from start to finish.
Fun fact: the voice actress who played Lin also played Megara in Hercules! She plays a main character, Gina, in another of Miyazaki’s films, ‘Porco Rosso’. Please react to more of Miyazaki’s movies, I’d love to see your reactions to them!

The composer of the beautiful music is Joe Hisaishi. His music is absolutely magical. Most of Studio Ghibli’s music is created by him

If I remember right this movie is supposed to represent the sex industry in Japan, at least what it used to be. Bath houses in Japan used to double as brothels, Yubaba was what the head woman of a brothel was usually called, and Chihiro represents child prostitution.

The first time I watched this movie I was really scared by it, but over the years after watching it again and again, I come to love it so much! It’s such an amazing journey that Chihiro has to take in order to free her parents and she grows so much by the end. I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this movie. I recommend you watch "Big Fish and Begonia", it’s a beautiful movie as well.

~Since ye’ve mentioned how ye like the water in animated movies, I don’t know if ye’ve seen it already but if ye haven’t and if ye really like Studio Ghibli: I definetley reccommend Ponyo as it’s a really lovely movie and I think ye may like it as it’s simply adorable~

I think No Face’s deal is that he takes in the qualities of his environment, like the never-ending greed of the bathhouse. Just like he took on the frog’s voice when he ate him. So he felt much more at peace somewhere like Granny’s house
