Since we all watched this, it’s not a spoiler anymore:
Toji died in the EVA. Later, Classrep went to the hospital to ask Shinji about Toji. Than Shinji had to face her, and tell her the truth about Toji.
Sony was not happy with the plot, and demand for his survival, because they don’t like children dying on screen. So Toji "only" lost 2 limbs. A fate worse than death for a sport loving person like him.

it’s burnable rubbish; it’s collected and incinerated. it’s a rather normal thing in japan
it’s always assumed that unit 03 was infected when passing tru the storm clouds

i think you will enjoy this, it’s a full 8 min of a specific fly me to the moon

Interesting how dynamic of roles of Misato and Kaji in Shinji`s Growth and parenting is reversed from the traditions. Usually it is the male figure that serves as a father and tells you to "Man Up" and stuff like that, but here that role is taken by Misato, while Kaji is more "Caring and empathetic one", like a mother.

When I first watched the series with the DVDs the opening of episode 18 threw me off and I spent several minutes switching the audio track because I thought it was stuck in English for some reason. Also Toji was burning trash in episode 17 or something. They wouldn’t be doing cremations out in the open where Kaji is in that scene.

Btw, I’m pretty sure they mentioned that the dude survived…somehow.

Jesus… I forgot just how great episode 18 was… so many chills.

EDIT: Also, I love the shot of the lone basketball in the dark gym. Judging by the last shot of episode 17, it’s pretty obvious what/who that represents. Nice touch.

Been waiting for episodes 18 reaction. Nice one! Gonna be watching every episode from now on as soon as they’re uploaded.

Good pickup on the fight scene parallels with episode 1. I’m pretty sure some of it is recycled animation which is a bit more obvious when you compare both episodes side by side.

As for what Touji was burning, it was probably just trash. In the scene previous, they mentioned that he was on class duty which would most likely involve jobs like that. Interesting fact: incineration of trash was more common in Japan in the 90s than it is today.

In ep3, when talking about her little sister being in the hospital, Toji says: "My father and grandfather work for the reasearch center. They can’t leave work. If i didn’t stay with her she’d be all alone." implying there is no mother in the family. One episode later Kensuke (Gun-otaku boy) tells Shinji he has no mother either. Here in ep18 class rep says she always cooks for her sisters, possibly implying that she too has no mother.

All the kids we know from the class have no mother, Ritsuko says "All the candidates were gathered together for protection." and Kaji when questioned about the Marduk institute directs Misato towards the school.

I guess there are a bunch of shelves in a basement at NERV filled with jars containing the souls of all the mothers of all the kids in Shinji’s class or something. Or maybe a graveyard with their bodies.

Great analysis as always, particularly on the direction! A few things I noticed on this rewatch:

    17
    * In 5, Shinji tiptoes into Rei’s room — her floor is filthy but he still does the typical shoe removal. Now in 17 he walks in directly and Toji is tiptoeing. Shows familiarity with her, I guess?
    * Toji tells Hikari that he doesn’t have anyone to cook for him — his mother is absent.
    * Anno really loves jarring music choices that contrast with the mood (techno Fly Me…).
    * I agree that Eva does exposition well, or in an interesting way. It often gives you just enough information to draw a conclusion without stating it explicitly. BTW, if you want to understand the "world building" of the show, I’d suggest really going deep into 21 when you get to it, which is exposition heavy. It took me a couple watches but there are some "light bulb" realizations to be drawn from it that increased my appreciation for EoE.

    18
    * You were so excited about the lack of Engrish I think you might have missed that the Angel was hiding in the clouds? 🙂
    * Did your version not have the TV dialog when Asuka and Shinji are hanging out? Background dialog is usually relevant in Eva, and funny. "My kissing sucks?" "Not just my kissing?!"
    * "Rei will do it without a second thought". But she doesn’t, she’s starting to care, and she feels her arm get blown off for her trouble. 🙁
    * Megumi Ogata does such a great job as Shinji at the end there and in general.
