Not my personal favorite anime but i think it’s ok anime except for season 2 (maybe it’s in second half of season 1 i watched it long time ago so I don’t remember) that part is a bit cringey and hard to watch.

they just play games The elf ears you see are also avatars in the game. You can see from the opening song that there is a cut back and forth between the real world and the game.

This is the timeline without major spoiler.
There are 2 movies and 3 seasons (If you count them as seasons anyways ,_,)
Season 1 has 2 arcs.
Aincrad arc
And Alfheim arc.
Season 2. Has 1 arc, and 2 side story arcs.
Phantom Bullet Arc
Excalibur side arc.
Mother Rosario side arc.
We will going to the movies first
First movie is a sequel to season 2. called Ordinal Scale
And the second It’s an alternative/spin off version of the Aincrad arc. Taking as the perspective of the FMC. Instead of the Male MC. Called Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night. Or Progressive.
The season 3. has 1 Arc. But has 3 parts.
First is Alicization.
2nd and 3rd Is Alicization war of the underworld (Part 1 and 2)
That’s basically all the storyline without major spoiler. There’s also spin offs like
SAO Gungale online. and the previous mention of sao progressive movie
And SAO Rising steel is a game. But some of the content (at least from what I heard) has some of the novels that was cut in the anime, was brought and added in the game.
Also forgot to mention. They hop to different games. That’s why there’s Fairies then guns all of asudden.

As divisive as the anime is, I really love the Sword Art Online series. And its openings are certified bangers
