good day smart person how’s it
going my name is dylan dance i’m a
physicist from the land down under grab
a coffee hold on where’s my coffee yup

talk some natural philosophy
so today we’re going to be trying harder with
dr stone we’ve done one video thus far it was
pretty cool found some science but we didn’t try
all that hard so let’s watch some more i’ll see if
i can find any more physics-y things in the show
and uh we can break it down so let’s get straight
into this one and before we get into the video i
just wanted to say yes we are watching an anime
and looking for physics in an anime and they
probably weren’t considering theoretical physics
when writing anime although this show actually
might have been um you might be thinking you’re
taking this too seriously blah blah blah but
as this show points out society and the world
is completely utterly dependent on science and
technology and almost nobody knows anything about
science for technology which is kind of a shambles
right so what i’m doing by making these videos is
essentially trying to trick you guys into learning
some physics and how some of this technology works
and how some of the science works and to try
and show you guys how it’s actually pretty
awesome stuff um so yeah that’s why we’re making
this i’m not taking myself too seriously if
you couldn’t tell from the suit and i hope you
guys aren’t either so let’s get into the video
and leave me a comment down below if you have any
good ideas for things that i can watch i’ve been
getting a lot of comments about steins gate so you
can bet your that one will be coming eventually

but also a great idea
all right all right let’s pause it there because
there’s a whole bunch of cool things there we can
uh spend a while talking about from what magnets
are to lightning causing permanent magnets
um and to generate it so let’s talk about magnets
but first let’s me let me say something that’ll
help you understand some of the concepts so
keep in mind that if you have an electric
charge like say an electron right and you move
it around you will generate a magnetic field
all right and if you have a magnet and you move
it around you will create a current okay so
just keep that in mind so what is a magnet well
when you have a material it is generally made of
atoms right and these atoms have electrons and
these electrons have this intrinsic property we
call spin all right they’re not literally spinning
but just imagine that they are okay so these
electrons are spinning and because these electrons
are spinning there they have electric charge that
generates a magnetic field like i told you so
electrons are like tiny little magnets all right
now you have a material full of atoms and full of
these electrons you have a material full of these
little magnets now most materials aren’t magnetic
because these little magnets are generally uh
mostly pointing in opposite directions and so
the magnetic forces cancel out all right but when
you have a magnetic material all these forces
are aligned they point in the same direction so
that’s what creates a magnetic material and with
that you have pretty much everything you need to
understand how generators generate electricity so
you have something that spins a turbine and if you
recall what i said at the start you attach magnets
to this spinning turbine and what does a moving
magnet generate an electric current so obviously
you need something to spin this turbine right and
you know if you burn some coal that’ll generate
some steam and that can spin your turbine or you
can drop some water onto your turbine and get it
to spin anyway it all results in the spinning of
a turbine that has magnets on it and that’s how
for the most part we generate all electricity
even with nuke at nuclear power plants that’s
exactly how it in the end kind of works so what
about lightning can it really create permanent
magnets like this show is demonstrating the
answer is yes so recall what i said at the start
lightning bolts are rapidly moving electric
currents so like i said moving electric charge
causes a magnetic field and yes lightning bolts
are hugely magnetic and yes things like soil rocks
can become magnetic after it’s been
struck with lightning so this is called
remnant magnetization um and sometimes when
we think things have become magnetic from a
lightning we call it lightning induced remnant
magnetization or natural remnant magnetization
um and some of the naturally occurring uh magnetic
rocks out there we think we’re all struck by
lightning uh how this exactly works we’re not too
sure that is just a theory about all the rocks
um it may simply just be aligning all
the spins all the spins of the electrons
making up all the atoms of a rock um so yeah
this anime really did get it right you could
create a magnet using lightning which would
be pretty hard uh and then you could create
a generator using this magnet as i’ve already
explained you get it to spin using a turbine and
so yeah i didn’t immediately chip in there
because i was hoping you guys would catch on
to what was going on if you recall earlier when i
was explaining if you move a magnetic uh a magnet
it creates electric current right so water will
if you attach a magnet to it in the right way
you can create an electric cone and that’s
what senku was just talking about it’s an
infinite you know source of energy and hydro
power which is what this technically is is
exactly that it’s what we call a green source of
energy it’s a renewable source of energy because
it’s being generated from water essentially so
you have the kinetic energy in the water moving
the uh water will but that kinetic energy
is generally coming from potential energy
that you know is being converted into
kinetic energy of the flowing water
moving the water wheel which you know moving
magnet generates electricity so i’m just going
over a lot so you guys get it and lastly i wanted
to talk about something that blew my mind when i
first learnt about it and it’s that magnetism is
simply nothing more than electrostatics combined
with special relativity now i’ll explain this
a little bit further but if you want a detailed
and a much better explanation i will link a couple
videos in my description so simply the reason why
magnetism is nothing more than electrostatics
combined with special relativity that is magnetism
and electricity are actually the same thing is
simply because it depends on what reference frame
you are observing electric current or a magnetic
field and that’s about as simply as i can explain
it so in one reference frame you’ll see a magnetic
field and in the other reference frame you’ll see
an electric field they’re really the same thing
just viewed from a different reference frame now

of what’s really going on all right that’ll

I think the creator of the show wanted to make learning chemistry/physics (one of the most grueling subjects for most) fun. The same was Stephen Hillenberg wanted to make Spongebob a fun way for kids to learn about sea life.

I wonder if it might be worth you reacting to Fullmetal Alchemist? It’s set in an alternate universe where the laws of nature are shaped by alchemy. There could be some interesting points of comparison with modern physics maybe?
Edit: personally, I’d advise the 03 over Brotherhood because it is more thematic than plot-oriented, which would serve this purpose better, imo. 🙂

Hey Dylan, im sure you have a whole lot to watch, but if you haven’t seen/read The Expanse I’d highly recommend it. It’s about as hard science as a scifi show can get coupled with just fantastic story telling.

In the series they highlight the limitations of mechanics and material, and discuss theoretical solutions to upgrade their combat ability.
Such as overcoming or dealing with the laws of thermodynamics?
Might be worth reviewing their explanation and use of it.

The only negative thing about this anime is the anti-theism attitude, it pushes this scientism agenda that discredit theology while most of the science that we have today came from not only theists but at times theologians. The scientific method that is being used today as a standard was actually developed by a Muslim theologian, the father of optics, Ibn Al Haytham, or Alhazen as known in the west.

I really would like an explanation on the process took place with the water in the Tungsten cave, how did the water flowed backwards?, the atmosferic pressure hits both sides of the pipe, so the forces should cancel out, what force is pushing the water upwards. The best explanation I can give is that gravity acts on the surface of one of the ends and creates little chunks of vacum, and when filling them, the water goes upwards, but I would like to hear more opinions

Steins:Gate is indeed one of the best Anime you could watch, in terms of science. “Steamboy” and “Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation ” could also be interesting picks. Maybe Planets could also still be a decent pick. A great one would maybe be “Cells at work”, but that is more about the biology department (Human body and it’s functions) and i am not sure how well versed you are in that regard.
Also… Do you like Star Trek btw? I myself am a big fan of Star Trek TNG and Voyager^^

I think you have great potential, still here are some suggestions, I can really feel your videos need some polish. Firstly the reactions are pretty dull: I know you can use only 5-10 secs clips cuz copyright, but it makes it so confusing, since some is off screen and some isn’t and also you look like you’re staring at the screen for several minutes. I think using only clips of the exact thing you want to explain and follow it up with instant commentary would make it more engaging. Secondly I think using some images when needed would make it easier to undestand, since i sometimes find miself lost if I don’t have visual feedback. Lastly, minor critique: try to use a less distracting background, I think it would make it a lil bit more professional, and make the viewer focus more on what you’re saying.

I as process engineer was honestly crushed how accurate this anime is in many regards. If we exclude the fact how easy they just find the materials and chemicals i was pleased how correct it was explained with the distillation process, the magnet and electromotor/ generator, the gunpowder even the galvanic coating of that spear and using the silver for detection of H2S gas near the sulfuric acid. The highlight for me was the sulfonamide Antibiotic they had luck that it was no antibiotic resistant bacteria or viral disease.
But that i am motivated to even think about such things while watching Anime is simply stunning!

To help you understand it way more I suggest you watch Dr. Stone in the dubbed version. S1 English version (aka dub) is completed so it’d be way more easier to understand imo. The one you were watching rn was called the subbed version where as it’s in Japanese with subtitles. Hope this helps!

It feels like I’m back in school. “TEACH! EXPLAIN WHAT ELECTRON SPIN IS PLEASE!” Don’t gloss over fundamental concepts saying ‘its called spin, but they dont really spin.’ Glossing over fundamental concepts is like pouring pudding as a house foundation. And yes I absolutely was always the asshole asking leading questions to keep the teacher on track whenever they started to get boring or confusing.
Its perfectly reasonable to just not mention things that aren’t relevant, but now I have to go research electron spin myself because all of my teachers growing up said something similar and I’ve never have had that knowledge gap filled.
*one hour later*
I’ve actually done some cursory research and it looks like electrons have no discernable size therefore they can’t really spin, however they do show behavior consistent with holding set values of angular momentum… this was established because they were able to subdivide homogenous atoms by firing them through a non homogenous magnetic field. Some went to the north pole some to the south, because they were all the same type of silver atom with a lone valence electron and therefore bipolar they should’ve been scattered based on individual rotation. Instead they split up into distinct smatterings. That behavior would be consistent with a magnetic moment from a set angle of rotation.
They also saw that hydrogen’s spectrum line was actually two lines very close together, from that they similarly reasoned that there had to be at least two sets of magnetic moment in hydrogen atoms rather than the random configuration that was always assumed.
That’s not how it really works, but that’s quantum stuff. So every atom on top of having macro level characteristics also has micro level characteristics, my guess is that the bazillion other types of spin were established similarly. Aaaaaand I feel like that’s plenty of explanation for cursory understanding. Correct me if I’m wrong senpai

-the whole plot armor for the war, Tsukasa exactly knows whats he up to, but i see no immediate conflict on their goals, they could of just agreed to revive the young people first, then see about the rest, its quite logical, killing the older ones not, but in that tempo they could not really finish all revivals anyway, and its not likely that just because some people are older, want and can bring back an old system

quantum physics is where things go completely wack, and become existentially terrifying. the implications are somewhat of a pandoras box. but things science can barely explain, if at all are the most fascinating. general weirdness is paradoxical topic, and its great to think about in the shower. much like the human brain and dreams. i love theoretical physics, and topics of that sort. i wonder what we can learn in the future about quantum superposition, entanglement and general weirdness at the planck scale using quantum computing technology.

Nitpick: Senku’s generator doesn’t move the magnets, look closer, the magnets are static. The generator is a bizarre double Faraday disk design. Not sure why went with that sort of design vs more traditional dynamo (maybe they just thought it looked cooler? or, more watsonian perspective, maybe easier to manufacture than making tons of wire, because making enough wire for all the coils would be big pain?
(Also, re electric and magnetic fields being each other from different perspectives, mild nitpick, more just adding a nuance: afaik, there’s sort of a timelike vs spacelike vector type thing going on there. If one observer sees a purely electric field, that’s not going to look like a purely magnetic field to any other observer, and vice versa, just like how all observers can agree on whether a vector is timelike, spacelike, or lightlike. So a purely electric field to one observer may look like it has a magnetic component to another observer, and a purely magnetic field to one observer may look like it has an electric component to another observer, you can’t fully flip them just by changing reference frame.)

If you took a lightning rod and bent it into an inductor could you amplify the strength of a magnet held in the center? How thick would you need the rod to withstand the lightning strike? Gotta say. Computer Engineer here, studying computer science and electrical engineering. I also study psychology intensely on the side with a future psychologist as a partner and my hobby is magic/mentalism. What a match this show was for me.
My geology major and metallurgical engineer roommates at the time 100% improved their subjects and representation in the show. I can confirm most everything electric except for vacuum tubes. Season two shows why they took the vacuum tube route but they could have used transistors or transformers instead of vacuum tubes which really rubbed me wrong at the times. Especially with senku’s scientific ability he could have made the transistors. But then we learn there’s other use for the vacuum and thus a useful tool for the near future. Otherwise my engineer and science friends all found no issue with it.
It is very clear senku is a scientist not an engineer. He knows things and makes what he understands with a curiosity toward the unknown rather than finding new uses and combinations of everything.
Now for mentalism and gen’s stuff (surprise I do magic and mentalism on the side and am obsessed with psych.) I don’t know how much I can say about mentalism before the mentalists come for me (the mentalist community is SO SECRETIVE) but gen definitely is using more of a deep understanding of psych than mentalist tricks for like at least half the stuff he pulls. There are moments that made me go “oh shiz where have I seen this before” when I see him using police interrogation techniques and other stuff (esp in the manga). He really uses psychology with a strong misdirectional viewpoint which many will argue is what mentalism is. Whether or not this is true, I cannot confirm or deny. 😉
