This episode (and the end of episode 2) are big examples of why watching the original Japanese voice actors is important. People say that the English dub/netflix adaptation don’t "properly portray the story" but honestly, that’s a bunch of BS. The biggest reason why watching it in Japanese is great is that absolutely nobody can match the performance of Megumi Ogata (Shinji’s voice actress). Those screams, the pain and anguish, the vulnerability. The Japanese voice acting really sets Shinji up as an empathetic character, he’s just this nice, sweet boy, thrust into an absolutely nightmarish situation, and Megumi Ogata’s screams… they are truly terrifying. The original voice acting (which was solved a bit in the Netflix adaptation) makes him sound more like, to be perfectly honest, a whiny lil shit. In a show built upon empathizing with the humans on screen, that can really mess with the emotional impact of scenes. Side note; a lot of the side characters are also just flat out better acted in the original.
Trying hard to avoid any sort of spoilers, but Toji, Aida, and the class representative (Hikari) are some S-tier supporting characters. Toji, while a bully character, is acting from an understandable position, his kid sister who he dearly loves was injured, and Shinji /was/ the cause of that. Aida (glasses nerd) is basically a frontline war journalist trying to capture the reality of their situation, despite a government controlled media blackout, and is (other than the main cast) one of my favorite characters. Hikari hasn’t had any sort of spotlight yet but she’s great in her own regard. The three of them really prove one of my favorite things about Eva, no matter if a character is in every episode, or just a few scenes, they’re so well thought out that it really feels like a world populated with human characters, and not just plot devices.
Episode 4 is definitely a polarizing one, but one of my favorites, and seems to pull inspiration from my favorite director of all time (Andrei Tarkovsky). If you have the time to watch some random youtube videos, I’d suggest watching "Andrei Tarkvosky – Poetic Harmony" by Criswell, which will give you a good idea of why Episode 4 of Eva is one of my top 4 episodes.

What the Angels actually are will be revealed in due time. I think one of the reasons that this series is so good, and has aged so well, is due to its complexity and to the way that the details of what’s going on are only revealed slowly over the course of the show. No spoon-feeding of the audience here; you’re expected to really think about it.

Your look at 20:22 is spot on. You didn’t talk about what you saw, though 😀
