(it was really subtle in a previous flashback episode, and when gendo was at the south pole… but notice how they were talking about inserting the lance of longinus before the second impact, and that when gendo was at the south pole, he had a huge, rod shaped object on his aircraft carrier. As well, below the south pole, there’s a huge empty area under the crust… just like Nerv headquarters is built in the top 4-9 percent of…) those are just the information though. come to your own conclusions.

The Asuka breakdown episode, to this day still my favorite episode, and one of my all time favorite Anime episodes, it’s just so damn brilliant. This is the kind of thing that would happen if you put the fate of the world on the shoulders of a child or a teenager.

Longinus (Lon-jai-nus) was supposedly the roman soldier that stabbed Jesus Christ after he was crucified. So the Lance of Longinus is the spear that he used, which has IRL mythology around it about it being a holy relic of Christianity. So that was what the anime was referencing here.
