I was a little surprised to see that Paranoia Agent didn’t make it on this list. While it’s certainly no mecha anime, it features quite a bit of the psychological exploration and themes found in Eva.

By this point everything has taken some inspiration from NGE, so the entire time you’re watching it you’ll be thinking it was done better in the other anime. Th issue with this thinking is that NGE was basically the raw form of these tropes while the others have been refined. This was an issue i had with FFVII. I remember hearing how it was groundbreaking, the game play was incredible, and the graphics were unreal. By the time i got to it years later, i had already played other rpg’s that took what it did and built on it. So FFVII was just meh to me. my point since this got long winded is that it should be Neon Genesis Evangelion: 7 Anime to Watch AFTER.

Or, you could just read the original Watchmen.
I found that after watching the series that Evangelion and Watchmen have many similarities between them in terms of characters and story. I would say some, but you just have to take my word for it.

Literally just know the tropes and common pitfalls of mecha and anime in general: child soldiers, conflicting messages about war, usually main “chosen one” protagonist who’s motivated and arrogant, mindless fanservice. That’s it. Enjoy the ride
