The saddest part is that Mumen Rider simply being there saved all those people, well the whole theme was all those hero’s stalling for time. Saitama would of eventually killed the sea king of course but everyone would’ve already been killed because he was too late.

I think the point is that Saitama does care for fame and validation, he would like to have it, but he’s that good of a hero that he’s willing to sacrifice it if it’s the right thing to do. He’s genuinely a selfless hero

That big mouth dougebag basically started disrespecting all the other heroes before Saitama who risked their lives to save his pathetic butt. For that Saitama saw being famous wasn’t worth it and doesn’t care anymore.
And Mumen Rider is the best character of the anime, instead of insulting Saitama he knows that without him all would be death and thanks him, and even went to look for him to give him a proper thanks. The only good letter that Saitama got was from Mumen Rider, he even says it when he finds Saitama.

Saitama is a hero with no body to sacrifice. he can’t be broken, hurt, or beat in any way. So when Sea King is dead and everyone begins to turn on the fallen heroes who gave it their all in the face of death to hold him off and protect the civilians, Saitama sacrifices the one remaining thing he can as a disenchanted unbeatable hero, he sacrifices his humility and pride. he calls himself a cheater and convinces everyone that he just finished it off, so that all the other heroes can get the respect they deserve for their actions.
If it weren’t for the earlier heroes; stinger, lightning max, purri purri prisoner, snek and the B’s and C’s in the shelter, Genos and Munmen Rider, all those civilians would be dead. but the people don’t see that sacrifice, they only see a single C class and a dead monster. saitama corrects their view and takes none of the glory at the end of the day, because for him it really was nothing. a single punch is less than some of the throwaway monsters get, and saitama didn’t even show up in time to actually save everyone. all those heros could have been saved if he got there sooner. in the end, he failed to save everyone, and took none of the glory for it, like a true hero should.
if you think to his backstory, saitama wasn’t much different than Mumen at one point. an average guy with average abilties and hero’s heart throwing himself into impossible fights for nothing. perhaps Saitama will be the strongest hero ranking above even Blast, but both him and Mumen can share the seat of truest hero.
