I personally couldn’t enjoy the story I understand it playing on the tropes of jrpgs but it felt way to familiar, like a Frankenstein compilation of many different jrpgs, I personally found the final boss to be really underdeveloped in this game

Hearing Clemps advocate better writing over censorship was just a breath of fresh air.

This video was the only reason I was interested in "The Hero" being in smash, I’m totally checking this game out when it comes to the switch.

You don’t like Veronica but loved Sylvando? Normally I respect your opinion, but seriously? I literally skipped all of his dialogue, he was that fkn annoying.

Wonderful review ma boi, though I have a couple things to note (not sure if I’ve already commented on this but eh). Though you may disregard it as fanboying if it seems like it.

    – I disagree with your take on Jade’s development in Act 2. Jade, ever since she was introduced, even before we knew her name or even saw her, was always described by other characters as a mysterious beauty, even if her personality isn’t at all based on this. When we get to her in Act 2, we see that her beauty might become her downfall. _Yikes._

But what does she do after we save her? Does she become ashamed of her sexuality, and lose her Sex Appeal tree, or something? Does she get traumatized and weakened by the experience? No. Jade refuses to let that side of her be a negative, embraces it and what she learned from the experience, and uses this table turn to kick the villain’s ass. ‘Cause Jade is awesome.

    – MIDI or not, listening to the Symphonic Suite online made me realize how much I liked the actual composition of each track, and I really started apreciating even the in-game versions.

Dragón Quest 1 2 3 is connected to this game and the music and some important plot points are direct reference to this old games the new content on switch has the hero of 3 so I recommend playing some of those in the mobile version or game boy Color or even super Nintendo or NES any version is viable and the world building is amazing talking to NPC is important to progress

I don’t think the issue with JRPGs and their combat systems is that they are outdated because they’re turn based but the issue is when a JRPG has way too many encounters that are mindless Attack-Attack-Attack affairs. If you have enough fights that actually make the player think about which skills to use then your turn based system is good but something that is slow paced but not strategic can boring people pretty easily which is something a fair amount of jrpgs can suffer from.
Then again, you also have a lot of people who think old and traditional = bad and outdated who will never try to understand or appreciate the nuance in something that might not look innovative at a surface level.

alright so personally id call the Persona Games the King of JRPG’s, not that I disagree DQXI is amazing. that being said in all reality id say Final Fantasy would be more fit for that title due more to its worldwide popularity, even tho some of the games are poopoo doodoo like tactics and XIII.

i just wanted to comment on how cool it was that you didn’t comment on the music produces personal beliefs. you left that to him and him alone only commenting on the substance of the work not the believes of the creator. i feel like more people should do this. its easy to forget that people we hate or that hate us are 3 dimensional or as a ogre one said " we have layers". so to just ignore that aspect and focus on what matters to the content your talking about really impressed me.

Good video clemps glad you had fun but I fucking hate the idea that turn based game play is inherently tied with nostalgia and being traditional when there are so many turn based rpgs with fun deep combat that’s also feels way better like trails of cold steal 7th dragon and has been hero’s

Finally came around to watching this video after finishing the game myself. Such a fantastic game and your video really explains why, although I’m quite disappointed with act 3 of the game and surprised it wasn’t mentioned at all in the video.

Funny that you mentioned the soundtrack being a bit of a disappointment, because I perked up with a smile the moment I heard the wonderful FF12 music playing in the background.

Square has dominated the UE4 and this game is proof of that but that opening CG cutscene has nothing to do with the UE4 being dominated or not by Square since that was prerendered. Other than that yes, this game looks gorgeous.

I have to agree with the music being off. A few songs were underwhelming at best. For a majority of them i muted the music and played Final Fantasy’s rich catalog of music over it.

I really want to like Dragon Quest. But I just hate Toriyama’s art. Every character he has ever designed looks exactly the same and he uses the exact same orange all over everything he ever does and it makes my eyes bleed.

  26. keozeo
    June 30, 2019 @ 4:35 am

the music actually isn’t done that way due to nostalgia.
the composer intentionally makes the game version of the soundtrack shitty so people buy the orchestral soundtrack from his record label.
    no im not kidding.

    RE: Turn-based being outdated…
I don’t know about other people, but for me it’s not that it’s "outdated" so much as it’s less engaging. Your comparison to chess could be further expressed by (well first off not everyone enjoys playing chess) how some people prefer time limits per turn whereas others prefer free length. Sitting there watching NPCs dawdle around in an overly-energetic idle animation as I wait out each attack to come in before I can quickly make my own is kind of boring, especially when I can complete my turn’s inputs faster than all of the animations (or text) following afterwards play out.

Personally disagree about jade but i totally see why you feel that way. I my opinion
jade never feels like someone who’d shy away or feel uncomfortable about sexuality, she’s not openly seductive but she’s willing to be if it nets results, i can understand why that’d make you uncomfortable but like she’s clearly adult and open about anything sexual related, she doesn’t need to be like, anything more to charm enemies imo, she outright enjoys using her leftover dark powers too so. i wouldn’t really call her tsundere not at all, she’s just not someone expressive about sexual stuff but she’s clearly fine with it and enjoys it underneath the mostly stoic exterior in act 2, shes more kuudere, but also extremely expressive when need be, i wouldn’t condense her to a single trope but i wouldn’t say it’s bad writing that she gets to charm enemies and have access to sexy stuff jessica did, or downright get into corruption transformation territory lol, it mostly ties into stoic, excusing herself to do whatever it takes to win battles, but hinted at enjoying being like that in act 2 if you ask me.

Shame about the emotionless turd of a hero. You can make a silent protag and still have them show character and agency. Luminary has none of that, he has the same dumbfounded expression on his face throughout the entire game, and simply stands around while things happen to him. I couldn’t identify with him at all.

And it honestly spoiled the whole game for me.
