i think from your uncut version, that it seems as if the video you watched cut out the last few seconds of the movie. they are an important few seconds. they dont explain anything but they are iconic, you should find them and watch them if you indeed had missed it.

Since you mentioned the Berserk ending, you may have caught on to this earlier, but Asuka is voiced by the same actor who played Casca. Even though Berserk was more graphic, Asuka getting torn apart like that was even more emotionally impactful for me. I felt sick watching it.

It’s been great revisiting this show with you. I tend to watch Eva at least once a year and always pick up new things each time. For example, recently, after more than 2 decades of the show being out, someone noticed and shared with the Eva community that whenever Gendo was away or out of town, Ritsuko wasn’t shown wearing lipstick. Which hints at their affair much earlier in the show than any of previously realised. It’s not super important, but it’s impressive how many little details can still be newly discovered in 2019. It’s definitely a show that you get a lot more out of on the rewatch.

As for the endings, It’s pretty normal to be confused and even a bit underwhelmed at first. But you’ll find yourself thinking about this show from time to time in the future and one day you’ll just think "damn that was a good show" and want to begin the rewatch. For now though, just let it sink in and process. Watch some youtube video explanations, or if you really want to go down the rabbithole look at EvaGeeks forum for theories and analysis which has been going on non stop for like 15 to 20 years lol. In particular the Rei Quantum Mechanics theory is definitely worth a quick read if you want to feel a real chill run down your spine.

It’s definitely a show that’s difficult to jump straight into a discussion about right after you watch it. I think it would be best to take a week or so off and then do a wrap up video with your final thoughts about the series as a whole.

Shinji didn’t want to fight at the beginning of the movie, because he felt alone and unworthy but mainly guilty, for abusing Asuka sexually and phisically. Asuka was the only person he cared about in the world, at that point in the story. Shinji caused the third impact, because he hated himself and rejected all of humanity. He basically killed everyone. But Rei and Kaworu, helped him understand that he must make the choice to be happy in the real world, because running away, is still going to keep causing him pain. So Rei, allows him and everyother human being to "materialize" in the real world again, IF they desire to keep on living and existing. Basically humanity was given a second chance. Then Shinji tries to kill Asuka again, because he doesn’t want to deal with the fact that she hates him even more now. Finally he realises that he can’t run from what he did to her and that he must live with the truth and the pain. Gendo’s entire plan, was to become god himself in order to get back together with Yui and all of humanity was supposed to survive and keep on existing, but Rei rejected him, stole adam from his hand and fused herself with lilith, initiating the third impact, with the intention to save Shinji. Seele, on the other hand, wanted to cause the third impact, erradicating all humans and giving back the earth to Adan and the Angels. Seele was a bunch of hypocritical religious fanatics

It seems you also didnt noticed and many people make the same mistake. Shinji was gonna get on the EVA, but remember that red substance called Bakelite? Yes, the EVA was in that solid substance, Shinji couldn’t do nothing even if he tried to enter

Perfect, now to understand it you need to learn quantum theory, the Bible and a couple of phycology books….jk, but once you watch it again, its so much easier to understand with all the context already in your mind

Most importantly, the fucking BEST summary of EVA in the entire internet. A masterpiece, funny, short and to the point. Imo a must read to brighten the mood after this dark, but hopefull finale: https://funnyjunk.com/channel/animemanga/Shimmys+summary+of+evangelion+long+post/yTgLMlG/

Well what can I say… Thanks for the series, it took a long time, but we are finally here. I enjoyed it a lot, now I will probebly just go back to quietly lurking on your AoT videos until another anime shows up that I’m equally passionate about. Or, in case you watch the rebuilds, you could hear me screaming with seathing, impotent rage about all the stuff that I despise about them. Would be an interesting change, but maybe you want to take a break from EVA after this long journey.

First, a fun fact about Asuka that I recently learned: Asuka Soryu was of course named after the Imperial-japanes aircraft carrier Soryu that was sunk at the battle of midway (Anno likes to name his characters after famous military-hardware) The way the 9 EVA fly in circles over her are a reference to a battle formation that torpedobombers used to trap ships, so that the ship was unalble to evade the torpedos coming from every direction. The Soryu was of course sunk by US-american divebombers, just 3 hits were enough to completely obliterate the famous ship. I just find it funny how similar Asukas last battle is to the battle of Midway, going from "Hey, that’s a lot easier than I expected" to "Oh, were did those come from?" to "Shits fucked" in such a short time.

I’ll not interpret anything, just point out interesting stuff because anything beyond that would be highly controversial and would take forever.

So, lets start at the beginning… Yeah Anno REALLY insisted that the jerking off had to be in the show… please note the throwback to the first episode, Shinji looking at Rei’s blood in his hand to this scene… very similar shot composition, just white instead of red.

The attack by the JSSDF is why the original Ending (EoE) was supposedly not the ending shown on TV. A massacre ordered by religous nutjobs in a large underground facility was just a tiny bit too similar to the Sarin-gas terror by religious fundamentalists in the Tokio subway that happened just a few months before.

I feel really bad for the JSSDF. The Japanese government is beeing lied to by Seele and they believe they are saving the world by stopping Nerv. Acually, since Gendos plan exists, the ARE doing more or less the right thing, but for the wrong reasons. During Asukas fight with the EVAs you can see injured JSSDF-soldier trying to safe their comrades from the battlefield, beeing crushed under the EVAs feet. Overall quite a shitty day for everyone involved.

Rei III is so cool in EoE. She stays in the background for most of the first half, but defying Gendo is the perfect conclusion to her character arch. I like how she first learned about true care and compassion from Shinji and then later about selfworth and confidence from Asuka ("I am not a doll") The Freudian term "introjection" springs to mind, the process of taking over character traits of those people around you.

Shinji… Yeah that is one of the reasons why I say watch EoE before 25+26. Its a bit easier to understand him when you come fresh from Kaworus death. Also, I’m sad that 95% of all viewers don’t see this, but the ambigous subtitles don’t help much. "I can’t get into EVA, there is nothing I can do" he says. Sounds very Shinji-pussy-esque until you see that the entrance to the EVA is litteraly frozen shut with superhardened-polymer-cement. And he is standing right in front of it, so he went to the EVA-cages on his own. In other words he was going to do it. Please note that only AFTER and THE SECOND after Asuka is dead, Shinjis mother decides that now would be the time to act… Just shamelessly refering to the "Yui is the true villain all along"-Theory here.

If you want to understand the mindfuckery that happens after Asukas death, just read most of Jewish creation myths backwords. Thats literally it until you get back to Shinjis mind.

Speaking of Shinjis mind: I once said in ep.9 that every single scene with Asuka wearing that yellow shirt is amazing. Their confrontation in Misatos apartement is my favorite scene in EoE. Shot composition, animation, voiceacting, writing, just everything about that is amazing. I love it.

The "cosplayers" in the dream sequence are the voice actresses of Misato, Asuka and Rei in their respective costume, while the crowd in the cinema is a bunch of people that were filmed during their watch of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth. So a few of them would see themselfes disapearing during EoE. That is an amazing idea if you ask me.

Yeah… kimochi warui… just linking this, for anyone who is prepared for the utter mindfuck that is Hegels atrocious writing style

I don’t think that was Annos inspiration, but it fits so good.

As allways, I have to stop. It’s 1:13am here and nobody would want to read any more of this. There are so many youtube videos doing this much better than me, just watch that instead 😀

Thanks to the maybe 3 people who read this from time to time, and thanks to you for creating this series.

It was a great pleasure to replay the show through your eyes. Actually this anime is very complicated to understand, and I dont think there is a single interpretation to the end. Do you intend to watch the rebuild of evangelion? It’s a series of 4 movies that recount the story (with a much improved animation), but from the second the movie becomes different, with the inclusion of a new pilot and totally different events. We have more participation from kaworu as well. The last film is still in production and it will arrive next year, with the end of the story. Movies have more action and less philosophical issues than anime.
