Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition: The Kotaku Review (S)
Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition: The Kotaku Review (S)
I (Tim Rogers) supplement my 2018 video review of the 2017 game Dragon Quest XI with this in-depth look at its 2019 “definitive” edition for the Nintendo Switch. In summary, this is the best way to experience Dragon Quest XI.
Wow, the developers of Dragon Quest must believe that the “definition” of Dragon Quest is portability! (That’s a joke about the resolution)

Tim, I adore everything you make and I’m gonna play Dragon Quest XI just to make you a happy boy. And also because i want to play it thanks to your reviews.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:40 am
so you think that Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI or Legend of Zelda on Super Nintendo were "not good?" or was that the crack you smoke talking?
October 3, 2019 @ 2:41 am
I had to stop after 3 mins of repeating same words dragon quest x 20
October 3, 2019 @ 2:42 am
My kids could not get into this, it was too boring for them.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:44 am
11 ftw
October 3, 2019 @ 2:45 am
I clicked hoping for Tim even though I own this game and the original already. Tim is always the best ?
October 3, 2019 @ 2:45 am
I love Dragon Quest and I love Tim Rogers.
BALBO?!
October 3, 2019 @ 2:45 am
Excellent review Tim. You got me to purchase the game once. Now let’s see if you’ll get me to purchase it twice.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:46 am
This video is very ASMRy.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:46 am
WAIT, PEOPLE HATED THE MUSIC IN DRAGON QUEST XI? WHAT?!?!?! O.O I LOVED THE SOUNDTRACK! IT WAS SO FUN.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:46 am
I can’t stand Tim’s snarky ‘ironic’ commentaries. I have the feeling that nothing is meant sincerely, and I’m constantly on high alert for being pranked. The whole thing sounds like a teenager trying to be edgy. Come on Tim, you can be funny without sounding like you’re taking nothing seriously. Just be you.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:47 am
‘super nintendo jrpgs are not very good.’ ok this reviewer is not very good
October 3, 2019 @ 2:48 am
Can’t say enough good things about this game, never played a DQ game before but I am having a lot of fun with this one.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:48 am
Snes jrpg’s are not very good? I would hate to see this guys Idea of the bon-vivant lifestyle!!
October 3, 2019 @ 2:51 am
not a review but titles it Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition: The Kotaku Review
October 3, 2019 @ 2:51 am
How many clown funerals have you performed karaoke to midi music at?
October 3, 2019 @ 2:52 am
Dang what a sassy review. I love it.
Edit: 11:27 "…while you ran out of gas, after telling your parents -in Indianapolis-…"
Hey I’m from Indianapolis and I can relate to that thing
October 3, 2019 @ 2:53 am
I’m the first to shit on Kotaku but this review was spectacular. Good work review guy. Good work.
October 3, 2019 @ 2:56 am
Writing your review for Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition to focus on the 2D mode in the interest of time and viewer interest as opposed to content, which had already been covered in the Kotaku review of Dragon Quest XI for PlayStation 4? Wow. That’s
.

Hey now, why are you all over the auto text, I got to make dinner listening to a long-as-hell cutscene I’d already seen a half dozen times!
…Also if you’re playing this and you’re like me please remember to eat
October 3, 2019 @ 2:59 am
Tim. How many times have you played Dragon Quest XI? You failed to mention it in the video.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:02 am
Does anybody else fap it to this doodes voice….
October 3, 2019 @ 3:05 am
I love the constant repeating of the name of the game 🙂
October 3, 2019 @ 3:05 am
I’m running away.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:06 am
tim: do you really speak 12 languages
good video as always, appreciate all the effort you put into them.
sadly, i did not enjoy my time with the original dq11 on ps4. yes i finished it because i hate myself. i dont know why i didnt like it. i loved 5 and 8. i honestly think the music had a lot to do with it. but all the new stuff, including the symphonic tracks and faster battles, might make me want to try it again
October 3, 2019 @ 3:06 am
tim i am playing it now and i cannot watch this until i have done my first playthrough but rest assured once that is done i will be checking in to watch this my usual 5-15 times as i do with all your vids…i am not yet ready to have this undiscovered country dissected
October 3, 2019 @ 3:08 am
1st half of review in sarcasm voice = my dislike
October 3, 2019 @ 3:09 am
I’m playing it right now (taking a break to eat) it’s not only becoming one of my favorite Dragon quest game (putting it up against 5,7,and 9) its slowly becoming my favorite game of all time. I plan on playing it completely in 3D for the 1st playthrough and completely in 2D the second playthrough.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:09 am
People: "Underha…."
Tim: "OBJECTION!!!"
People: "But…"
October 3, 2019 @ 3:10 am
There’s a video called "Why the Music in Dragon Quest XI is So Terrible | Past Mortem [SSFF]" that goes into a lot of detail of the music, and the 88-year old (that’s almost 90 years!) composer of the music. Along with his world views, that definitely feel like what you’d expect from an 88-year old.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:10 am
2 minutes in to this video and I’m already annoyed by this dude.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:12 am
When it comes to the music, I don’t really care about the orchestra vs. midi music. My problem was how redundant it is. That overworld theme is WAAAAY overplayed and loops too quickly. They should have had different music for different regions.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:12 am
This review is just like Kotaku: FUCKING OBNOXIOUS.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:13 am
I wish i had a switch to play the 2d mode ?
October 3, 2019 @ 3:14 am
I bought the game. thanks Tim. (make more videos like this please)
October 3, 2019 @ 3:17 am
I’m not even pissed the Switch version has more content. Jealous, perhaps. I’ve played this game going on 900 hours across 4 playthroughs and I still love it. My favorite game ever also cementing The DQ series as my favorite RPG series of all time.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:18 am
When you’re trying to meet the word count
October 3, 2019 @ 3:18 am
Is one of your favorite anime Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood? That voice sounds just like Envy’s ?
October 3, 2019 @ 3:19 am
Ok so this is the first video review I’m watching from the author. I am now a big fan.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:24 am
32:18 Having 100% DQ 11, I can confirm I dislike myself.
Already put in 40 hours into the casino in the Switch version to do it again, so I guess I can confirm I hate myself too.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:27 am
Is the new edition being released next week also able to be played with English voice over or just Japaneses ?
October 3, 2019 @ 3:29 am
I really wanted to play the demo but I was most interested in the 2D mode. It wasn’t available so that was that.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:29 am
Does it really have a ps2 graphics style?! When and were can I access that?
October 3, 2019 @ 3:29 am
I chuckled more than once in this "review". It’s amazing. The composer still sucks for not letting us have actual orchestral. Greedy bastard.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:32 am
If you don’t speak Japanese why would you wanna listen to it in Japanese that makes no sense
October 3, 2019 @ 3:34 am
If it is any consolation, I liked your original Dragon Quest XI review so much, I watched it 4 or 5 times and at least once with that time’s girld friend, who doesn’t even play video games. Edit: For the people upstairs: It’s also the video that made me follow your videos on Kotaku and check back periodically.
October 3, 2019 @ 3:35 am
Need this on Xbox tbh. Stop being withholding Square-Enix
October 3, 2019 @ 3:35 am
HAR HAR The game doesn’t look as good as the PS4/PC versions, so it must be an intentional "Playstation 2 throwback mode"
October 3, 2019 @ 3:36 am
Cant wait to see a video of somebody fighting the post game boss with all of the draconian options all on (including the new ones)
October 3, 2019 @ 3:37 am
I feel like the author hates me specifically. The passive aggressiveness is over 9000
