If you remember from the last episode of season 1, kirito is the one who says welcome back and asuna says I’m back. Now the roles are flipped. Best episode of SAO so far.

MASSIVE PROPS TO "Yoshitsugu Matsuoka," the VA of Kirito/Bell Cranel/Sora/Arata… that whole performance was fuckin’ phenomenal…

War of Underworld is the GREATEST arc of SAO as a whole, honestly… So much has happened and we still got more to come!

When Kirito blocks Vassagos attack and then walks to the barrier and his arm regrows and becomes one with the magical one… I don´t know why, but I find that so visually pleasing. Reminds me of Bercouli slashing Vectors past.. so beautiful.

Easily favorite episode of the series.

A couple of personal notes (there are spoilers not for the anime, but if you aim to read the books at some point):

First, it was the Moonlit Black Cats. I’m not sure of the solid answer as to which floor Kirito first met them, but I want to say it was April 2023 on floor 11 (if you’re familiar with the Progressive novel series, it’s shortly after when Kirito and Asuna will end up splitting. Reki hasn’t written that far in the Progressive series yet, but it’s easily determined from his other canonical side stories). The guild ended up being wiped out June 2023 in the floor 27 dungeon, and for the next 6 months until the resolution of the Red Nosed Reindeer arc he lived the kind of personal semi-suicidal hell that Asuna did on the first floor for the first month until she met Kirito.

Next, I thought they did an excellent job in Kirito’s walk through his hell of memories. I thought it was perfect considering the limited amount of time they have to work with in an anime episode. That being said, the hell was even worse in the novels, as they left a few things out that the anime only viewers wouldn’t be aware of and would have taken up valuable time explaining. First, after Kirito left the school, he ran into a schoolmate at a convenience store parking lot that was also a fellow SAO beta tester. He was with a group of "friends" (think of Shino’s "friends" at her school) and he was giving Kirito a pleading look to rescue him. However, because by that time Kirito had found out that he didn’t actually belong to his family and was having issues trusting people really were who they claimed to be, he left him to continue being bullied by his friends. Fast forward to the first day of SAO where Kirito left the Town of Beginnings to get a jump on the rest of the players. His goal was to be the first to complete a quest that would earn him a sword that, with proper upgrading, would last him the first several floors of Aincrad. During the quest he ran into a fellow beta tester named Coper, and they agreed to complete the quest together. However, once Kirito claimed the item drop that would complete the quest, Coper turned on Kirito by attacking one of the monsters that would draw the dozens of monster in the area to that location while he hid in an attempt to monster-player kill (MPK) Kirito in order to steal his drops and complete the quest for himself. However, the MPK backfired on him as his newly acquired hiding skill didn’t work the way he imagined and was killed instead. The irony is one of the first monsters to arrive was one that would allow Coper to complete the quest as well. These two things really set the stage that would really drive Kirito into the despair that was the wipe of the Moonlit Black Cats, but I also thought the anime did an excellent job of just jumping right into it, and the way they did it made it feel like those first two events weren’t necessary, so bravo to them.

Finally, the episode gave me the one thing it absolutely had to include – the memories of Yuuki giving Asuna the push she needed to attack PoH. It was an absolutely critical detail as this event defines for the audience what Kirito’s and Eugeo’s relationship going forward will be, not to mention it was so well done. And I really appreciate that it looked like they aged Yuuki just a tiny bit. She looked incredible.

I was just so impressed with this episode overall.

It really shows the great variety in viewpoints that this episode can either be the best of the series or one of the worst. I think it’s more in the middle. Kirito awakening was hype, the music was great, and the visuals really did look excellent. Nothing wrong with Kirito looking inside of himself there.

On the other hand…Asuna’s fight was completely pointless. Poor Yuuki made a visit from beyond the grave just so…nothing would be accomplished. The downside when you have to let Kirito win a fight is that no one can do anything. And then you have Kirito being unbelievably OP in shutting down a gigantic combined army of Chinese and Korean players….by himself.

Highs and lows with this episode.

Amazing episode, so worth the wait ^_^
    Asuna+Yuuki combo… breathtaking <3 <3 <3
Kirito’s internal suffering and recollecting his painful past – heartbreaking (I wasn’t planing on making puns, lol)
And finally HIS awakening and stopping all the shit that was going on around in a freaking instant, OMG!
    Welcome back, Kirito!!!

While the series definitely has it’s flaws, a poor season 1 adaptation probably the biggest among them, SAO was a gateway anime for a lot of people. The series gets a really bad rap mainly because the season 1 execution didn’t live up to the hype the series generated before airing. People like Digi and Geoff, who refuse to look at the series with anything but a viewpoint of literary criticism, don’t help the West’s reception of the show at all. To them, if it’s not a masterpiece, then it’s garbage along the lines of Hand Shakers which isn’t the case at all.

While SAO will never be the most critically acclaimed series (even including the LNs) it is definitely very entertaining, as evidenced by the size of the fan-base. This season is probably the best part of the series as a whole and showcases just how good an anime series can be with proper execution of a good story.

Are they going to adapt Moon Cradle as a season or movie bcs it takes place after the Alice arc? I think it should be a season , since Kirito, Asuna Ronie and Tiese are in that story. What’s your thoughts?

A-1 just had one job. To adapt the Nightmare scene properly. But Nooo, we ended up with a powerpoint presentation. The whole of alicization was building up to that moment. So what did A-1 do? Cut 2/3 of the Scene and add scenes that makes no sense in the form of a powerpoint presentation. As a LN reader this episode was very disappointing.

For the people saying that kiritos eyes were yellow in the opening that’s kirito in his incarnation state with his black swordsman outfit. We prob won’t see his incarnate duel wielding state until his fight with vector.
