Actually if you think about it at the time that the cooler movie took place it was within the year that the androids were suppose to arive. And goku could only go super saiyan through consentration like when he transformed for trunks or anger. But of course further into dbz and into super he became so powerful it takes little to no consentration for goku to transform. Plus in the fight cooler never gave goku the chance to transform so anger was the only way. And by the time goku had time to consentrate when cooler flew up he was weakened to the point were he cant transform just like that he had to get a burst in power like from anger.

FUN FACT: According to one of the DaizenShuu magazines, Sauza is the only person who ever saw Captain Ginyu’s original form, suggesting that before he worked as part of Cooler’s Armored Squadron, Sauza was originally part of the Ginyu force, or at least worked in close proximity to Ginyu under King Cold.

Something that always confused me was that when the saiyans came killin was about 3,400 power level and he cleanly cut a mountain in half, and even at that point gohan was stronger at nearly 8,000 if he was capable of using his full strength, and after namek his power was about 6,740,000 much less than freeza or goku’s but with that power level he should should have been able to flick the cave in away but he somehow needed killin ,who was far, far weaker, to move the rocks?

Now if I remember correctly, Cooler’s Revenge takes place shortly after Goku and the others return from Namek…and *somehow* Gohan has his tail back.
