If you EVER react to Neon Genesis Evangelion, react to the movies. Not saying the original series is bad. far from it. but it has layers over layers and you really need to have a lot of knowledge about religion, culture, and symbolism, that you can miss loads of things. For example, Gendo’s glasses are a representation for the relationship Rei has with him. At the beginning, they are broken, but she treats them very carefully, since they are important to her. And so is Gendo to her. At the end: not anymore, they are even more broke than before, and just lay around. And there are tons of example in the story you can miss.
So, here is something:
watch the original by yourself. Add End of Evangelion to it, too. after you’re done (and you recovered, lol), watch the current movies (1.11, 2.22, and 3.33). These, too, have a lot of hidden symbolism, but way less layers. The symbols are less subtile, but still subtile enough to be missed if you don’t pay attention. But it’s not like on a level you’re wondering: "what happened?".
Also, it’s important to watch the original series in my opinion, since there are certain scenes that have tremandously changed perspective, and make more sense now. talking about the train sequences here.
Anyway: NGE is great, and yes, it has a case of a whiney depressed MC. But all the characters are traumatízed, depressed, but coping and maybe hiding the pain in their own way. Which makes sense in the world they are living in.

Late to the party. Fun fact, there are 25+ version of the Evangelion ED "Fly me to the moon." The different versions were song by the various voice actresses in the show. The version that is probably the most famous is "Fly Me to the Moon, CLAIRE ver" (the first 4 episodes’ ED). Fun fact#2, during an old interview, Megumi Hayashibara (Rei’s voice actress) revealed that the producer of the show wanted her to sing "Fly me to the moon" in the creepiest way possible and recommended her to think of (not a direct translation but some what close to the following translation) "a murd3r3r that eats baby while smiling."

1. sugar song to bitter step (kekkai sensen) I have never met anyone who didn’t like this song.
2. Los Los Los (youjo senki) it actives something in me
3. Tiny light (toilet bound hanako kun) soft.
4. Kisetsu was tsugitsugi shindeiku (Tokyo ghoul) coming from Tokyo ghoul, it says a lot
5. aLIEz (aldnoah zero) sawanohiroyuki
6. Ninelie (kabaneri of the iron fortress) aimer x chelly (egoist) + sawano, bless the heavens for this combination
