best ghibli film ever. the score paired with the excellent editing and amazing detail of animation def puts this movie at the top of the shelf for me. ponoc has got to expand more on the action. mary and the witches flowers, i thought was going to be one of these movies based on the opening scene. SO EPIC. but i wasnt a fan on how that story unravelled after that. i thought it was going to be a castle in the sky with much better action scenes. meh. ponoc is still new. got a lot of room for growth. my biggest issue with princess mononoke is that it isnt on amazon or available for stream anywhere.

While I disagree about it being heavy handed due to the nuance of the story and the fact that almost none of the sides are portrayed as truly good or evil (though I will say that Ashitaka is definitely a selfless and heroic guy but I think that’s due to where he comes from in comparison to the other characters) I definitely agree with everything else you’ve said about this masterpiece. It’s one of those films that gets to me emotionally by the very end of it and every aspect of it works in such a profound way. Also, I don’t care what anyone says, 3D animation will never have the look, feel and personality of traditional hand drawn animation.

Once again the nuclear bomb symbolism is off the charts. They seperate nature like they seperate the atom and out comes a distructive violence that rises untill it literally takes the shape of a mushroom cloud and its waves eradicate everything in its radius.

A review that couldn’t get it more wrong.
1. He wasn’t considered "unclean" he is going to die horribly because of the mark, he was given a choice of stay or leave if he left he is forever "dead" to them given that his fortune seems to say so.
2. Lady Eboshi doesn’t even have the slightest amount of "hate" towards the forest spirits and animals she just wanted the iron and in some degree show the forest animals human superiority and in regards to killing the forest spirit elk she was just hired to do it.
3. The forest / Nature clearly isn’t going to fight as what is depicted with the forest spirit elks disposition.

The story is pretty boring. Animation is awesome. Musical score is good but barely there. Main Characters don’t have enough layers. Personally a 5,5/10 from me, sadly.

I’d give it an A+, except for one thing. I was more overwhelmed by San as a character in her early scenes, rather than at the end of the movie. I kept finding myself wishing thye’d cut back to her and do more scenes with her. Her character was stunning, and initially interesting, but I almost feel like the opportunity was missed to really develop her character and her part in the story, at the expense of Ashitaka and some of the other supporting characters.
I’m watching through the whole Ghibli Library. Up to this point I’ve also found that Miyazaki has an incredible talent for conceiving of, and then realizing, his main characters. Nausicaä, Satsuki & Mei, Kiki, Porco (and Fio :-)). Amazing main characters that carry their respective stories effortlessly. San is the first such character I couldn’t say that about, and it’s about the only negative thing I have to say about this, otherwise, masterpiece classic. Not saying San was a ‘bad’ character by any stretch. Just a little incomplete perhaps. If you’ve not seen it, then see it. Absolutely stunning.
Can’t wait to see it again, and I’ll try to catch it on the big screen at some point.
