Basically, NGE took every little thing about mecha anime and turned it on it’s head. It shows how messed up the individuals who are in those series would actually be. The point where people start to get turned off is when the series focuses more on Shinji. At that point, it becomes less about the mechas, and it becomes more about each characters personal journey.

Oh yes, it also has some of the most messed up scenes in any anime, that still shock to this day.

How can one understand Evangelion? Even it’s creator down not understand it. You don’t love or hate Evangelion based on weather or not you understand it, you do so on weather or not you interpret it, and how you do so. Me, I like Eva (especially the 10-16th episodes), but I don’t love it, and I fully admit to it being overrated (anything over an 8 out of 10 is overrating it). As for the endings, the TV one is a disappointment and the movie one just pissed me off.

Actually, Ode to Joy is apparently a spiritual celebration of the ideal of unity and brotherhood of all mankind, which is the ultimate goal of Nerv’s Instrumentality project.

Not only that but, scenes from the last few episodes and movie, that show these seemingly flat characters are deeper. Ritsuko is a good example, she starts off as just the regular scientist, Ms. Exposition, until we see just how many secrets she knows. After that she becomes much more sinister and sad.

Edited this trailer back when I worked at ADV. Yeah its all action sequence based but I sorta opt’ed for that at the time, it was actually just a bonus trailer out of all the trailers made for the at that time. Pure experiement wing it goodness..

At the time it was hailed as a reinvention of the giant robot genre. It places a focus on the character’s emotional breakdown over the course of the series. It also eventually bucks conventions by abandoning the plot’s continuity in favor of abstract imagery that wanders through the minds of the characters. Some of the best animation for its era. It is an interesting psycho-sociological commentary for the philosophically minded – the movie is also quite disturbing. Highly recommended!

Oh hey I saw this at the beginning of Destroy All Monsters too! I’ve tracked down the Battle Angel trailer too. But I sadly can’t find Gunhed anywhere. Though I heard that flick was lame.

Still three awesome trailers before one awesome movie. Win.

You either understand, or don’t understand Evangelion
If you understand it, you will love it.
If you don’t have any brain, you will hate it.
