The Backlog of Fall Season of Anime 2016 begins with Neon Genesis Evangelion. Today I bring you my overall first impressions of the series so far. This video talks about Episodes 1,2, & 3. For those that want clarification I was watching the English Dub instead of Sub.

shinji still suck as a main character because his emotions are like waves some time he be up something he be down in fact one of the episode he quit and said fuck the world but you got to watch the whole series to understand why people hated him as a main character.

Clearly you have been listening to people who are NOT fans of NGE. Fans don’t think Shinji is a bad character, not at all. Just that he is not likeable. But no fan thinks he is a bad character or that it’s unreasonable for him to be the way he is.
You have been listening to haters who probably didn’t watch the show.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorite animes of all times, it’s very good except the ending but with the alternative ending (the end of evangelion) they fix my misconception of animes always have bad endings to almost every anime has bad endings xD
PD: i like Evangelion so much that is on my top five animes and there’re only 4 animes on that top xD

Eva is one of those series with a cool story, cool characters, cool world and a giant piece of shit MC. I was his age once and I dont think anyone I knew at that age was such a pathetic loser. I still hate to this day when anime tries to sell me a MC who is a complete loser but he has incredible hidden potential that he never had to worked for and everyone treats him positively because of it.

Nah, when people say Shinji is the worst character, they don’t mean he’s badly written. They’re just being salty because he actually acts realistically as a teenager with obvious mental health problems and fear of abandonment put in his situation of having to save the earth all the time. He’s not wish-fulfillment enough for them. That’s why half the fandom can call him the worst character ever and the other half consider him the best written character of all time. The creator of Eva was actually clinically depressed when he wrote NGE and wanted to express his feelings through it.

The people who hate Shinji, I would like to see them get into a giant scary looking mech and fight powerful monstrosity’s at age 14 on top of that have bad up bringing. People would say OH I could’ve did that at age 14 but if you really had to do it in reality you be scared. Christ people fear over having a job interview, public speaking, taking a final exam, and serving in the line of duty. It’s understandable to fearful because you’re human.

I really don’t get why Shinji gets so much hate. The only reason to really hate a character for me if he/she was badly written, used as a plot device, non-sense motivations etc. But Shinji is none of that. Sure you could say you hate him as a person maybe because you generally don’t like to see spineless people but as a character I don’t see any reason to hate him.
As long as you keep the mindset that Shinji, as well as the other characters, have to deal with so much shit, their actions like mental breakdowns make sense. I swear whether you will like Shinji later on or not is up to you but never were his actions unjustified or not understandable.

You won’t regret watching it. However, if you don’t really get why it’s so hyped in the beginning, that’s normal. The awesome stuff happens pretty late in the series. Also, Shinji’s character is awesome. It’s a realistic portrayal of what a kid like him might really act like.

shinji is not terrible, theres issues. but there realistic issues. and this is a great show! its very psychological and deep. also the subs are better but the dubs arent bad at all. keep watching!

The original Japanese cast is legendary so dub is a big no no. but otherwise i look forward to your impressions of the rest of the episodes. i saw it when it came out so it is quite nostalgic seeing someones first experience with it…and when you are done you have some extraordinary original anime Eva movies to watch. 🙂 And further into the future why not try hunt down other Gainax anime like Gun Buster & wings of honneamise? You wont be sorry one bit

Chibi, after you finish this and end of evangelion, I suggest you consider watching it again (maybe with subbed to be different), this is very much a show where it gets deeper with rewatches.

Evangelion was a subversion of the giant robots genre. As they typically have this "courageous young hero guy" that has become bland over the years, I understood what they were going for with Shinji and found it refreshing.
Shinji’s uncooperative attitude may seem selfish at first, but the series also lets you understand there’s something fishy going on behind the scene.
Asuka played the role of the would-be hero and useful idiot. What good did it bring her?

I don’t believe Shinji is a bad character. He is a very believable character. In the same situation, I don’t doubt that most people would shut down the way he does multiple times in the series. The thing is that the show is filled with many characters who are very strong and bold and Shinji’s presence negatively impacts them. To this day, I can’t listen to songs from the show’s soundtrack without thinking "Fucking Shinji."
