The thing about Evangelion is that it’s an anime that it slaps anime fans in the face and shows how ugly we all can be. We retreat into escapism in an unhealthy relationship that we think can replace the problems of real life (Shinji’s running away), and that no, not everything in real life can be happily resolved and no, we can’t perfectly understand one another to guarantee a happy resolution, and no, you, the anime viewer, are not the hero and you’re not saving the world, and no, the tsundere isn’t some one-dimensional girl just coping with puberty, she’s a real person with doubts, flaws, needs, and wants that you need to respect, and no, the “silent type” doesn’t like you (EoE, when Rei III rejects Gendo), you’re just a sick adult who likes playing with lifeless dolls while you project the idea of someone that actually accepts you when the irony is nobody will accept you if you can’t recognize that person as another human being. Get over your problems, stop running away from them, and learn to like yourself. No, not everybody hates you, and perceptions of others hating you is quite possibly your own self-loathing spiraling out of control (End of Evangelion), but because you’re strong enough to take care of yourself and differentiate yourself from others to the point where you recognize yourself and actually like yourself (episode 26), you have to learn to separate yourself from escapism and stop running away from your problems thinking you’re just going to hurt others and hurt yourself, (EoE, when Shinji separates from Human Instrumentality in the end). And though in the end not running away will inevitably cause you pain, you have the unbreakable solidarity that your life is real, your own.

The only part of this video I enjoyed was the Gendo bit. The criticisms are all fairly tripe. Shinji is meant to be a realistic portrayal of how a mentally troubled 14yr old would act. And the endings, I mean, again, that’s the point. It’s not supposed to give you the answers. You need to figure it out yourself.

If all or at least half of the things were explained or hinted in the anime, then I could give it more praise but the story is all over the place. It doesn’t know how to be vague in its hidden storytelling. I like thinking. I don’t know if I can compare anime to a video game but if this game could be more like dark souls and have more understandable clues within the the show, I probably could call it a masterpiece. But even the guys in countless videos I’ve seen don’t get all their information from the anime or movie.

You missed the whole point of neon gensis ‘-‘ the ending is human instrumentality project in action everyone becomes one with one another then shinji saves all of humanity from this fate by rejecting it (p.s explaining what human instrumentality project is )the project is to make all mankind into one being so everyone can accept and understand one another however doing this kills off your ego i.e yourself. Meaning you have no personality desires dreams etc. The reason you feel this way because you are one with all. An the reason shinji chokes asuka at the ending is because hes trying to confrim that hes not still in human instrumentality and this last bit im about tell is not confirmed but has weight the last line said by asuka is (kimochi warui) this word has no true English translation but through lots and lots of reading and YouTube videos i discovered it is a word pregnant women of japn sometime use to explain pregnancy pain/emotional pain again its a word that cant be translated. So basicly the theory is that sometime before the events of the end asuka and shinji had sex. Yea i get that hard to believe but you can watch video on youtube just type in it has a good amount a weight and helps explains the last line even more

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Neon Genesis Evangelion. The plot is extremely complex, and without a solid grasp of human psychology most of the themes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Anno’s atheistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his show- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Søren Kierkegaard literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these characters, to realize that they’re not just cartoons- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Evangelion truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the depth in Gendo’s famous line “Get in the robot, Shinji,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Sigmund Freud’s idea of the Oedipus Complex and how Shinji is fighting the urge to literally be inside his mother. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hideaki Anno’s genius wit unfolds itself on their screens. What fools.. how I pity them. ?

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Eva tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid ?

Funny thing is… Anno would rather have you draw up your own conclusions to what is going on towards the end of eva than try to explain things. In fact, he’d be right there with you when calling fans pretentious pricks. There’s a reason why a there’s a famous photo of him with the caption of "I dunno. Go fan wank or something."

You need to revist this review now that you’re older… rewatch with an older, wiser mentality… not saying this series doesn’t irritate me… but knowing you.. you owe it to this series, this anime, and the community to give a more in depth analysis

I feel like the whole scifi mecha back drop makes it hard for some people to understand why a 14 year old kid would be a little fucked up by being forced into piloting a war mech into combat against godlike beings.

Maybe if it was framed by showing Shinji in a more realistic setting of an actual just child soldier being handed a rifle given no training and pushed out the door to go kill shit.

Shinji being a bitch is entirely justified and explained very clearly. I don’t get the hate for his character he seems incredibly well written and I could easily empathize with his desire to just walk away.

not gonna lie, this video just seems like an angry shitpost rather than a real review. ive never seen eva but i can tell from the tone that you already had a distaste for the show before you even watched it. im guessing the community or fandom pissed you off.

I just finished watching the Evangelion anime ( haven’t watched the movies except for about last half of the "end of evangelion " one) and I completely agree with Gigguk, it was good up until the ending. It literally ends with the main character accepting himself, but there is no closure to the actual plots of the anime. What happened with Rei?, what happens with the father of the year? I’m not sure if the manga or original source material was completed at the time that the anime was being create or if it was still unfinished ,similar to how the 99′ Berserk anime abruptly ends at the eclipse due to the manga not being that much farther along. All I can say is that is was a good anime for the most part, the character development for the 3 kids was pretty good although I was fearing their impending demise the more they were fleshed out, but the ending is garbage in my opinion. I may have to rewatch the last 3-4 episodes to see if I can see what all the praise is all about but IMO I doubt I will. The OP and outros are great. I really liked the way that they would change the tone of the outro song to match the episode’s content or introductions of characters, From the quiet and somber sound relating to Rei, to the more "poppy" sound when Asuka is introduced, it was a great touch.
