I am loving your Eva reaction vids! Your investigative skills serve you well for this series! You are also the only online reviewer who pronounces “Evangelion” the right way, with a soft e. The English dub uses an “ay” sound, which is now commonly used, but not true to the original Japanese version. Also, you’re right that Evangelion and Eva are the same, and interchangeable. In Japanese, Eva Unit-01 is “Eva Shougouki,” literally “Eva First Unit.” They never say the 0 in the unit numbers (unless it’s Unit 00). So it would be Eva Unit 1 when said aloud in English.

I suppose the basic idea of the episode is to have Shinji’s two "friends" (if that’s what they are), Tōji Suzuhara (the ‘bully’ whose sister was injured during the first battle) and Kensuke AIda (the computer/videocamera nerd), actually see what piloting EVA Unit 01 does to Shinji. And it isn’t pretty.
The so-called "psychological aspects" begin to raise their head: the Hedgehog Dilemma (as an explanation for Shinji’s personality, his fear of being hurt — he was, after all, abandoned by his father; note also Misato’s conversation with Ritsuko about Shinji’s personality), Tōji’s perception of what Shinji goes through in the EVA… Tōji’s failed attempt to apologize. Yes, Evangelion "gets" people: they do behave like that. They do shy away from responsibility and pretend it isn’t their fault. They do get hurt while trying to "do their duty". The men who came back from Afghanistan with PTSD or worse afflictions can tell you that.
And Shinji screams….
Yet he remains there. What is keeping him there? Is it the "hero feeling"? I have to do it? Is this why he says "I mustn’t run away?" In a classical Meccha animē, that would indeed be the reason: the hero (since the boy is going to grow into a hero) sees that he has no choice, that he needs to sacrifice whatever problems he has in order to be there and save the world. Because, otherwise, we’re all screwed, right? He has to do the right thing, doesn’t he?
And Shinji screams…

1. first impact is the one that killed all the dinosaurs
2. If you really want to know what happens in the show. The bible is your best friend. They are following the prophets in the bible with a twist.
3. Angels are literally angels
4. Eva is actually spoiler proof. It’s way to complicated that even if you’re told the story ahead, you still need to think twice to figure out what’s going on.

…yeah, well. I won’t say that. That blasted Anno sometimes put ‘Half transparent single frame image’ which contains some crucial information about background story(e.g. about Eva) in the middle of scene like the opening where multiple images are put together within a second. and guess what, this is just one of many examples of hidden information in this anime 🙁
Moreover, if you don’t have enough knowledge in Judaism and Bible, you won’t be able to notice enormous amount of symbolism in the anime.

This show has a crazy amount of dense backstory and world-building. There’s a ton of mysteries, questions, and weird stuff, and none of it is included just to be mysterious for the sake of being mysterious. Keep analyzing and paying attention, when all’s said and done you won’t feel like time spent trying to puzzle it out was a waste.

The 1st impact was the "Big Bang"…
The 1st and 2nd Angels were Adam and Lilith…
The 2nd impact was caused by the Humans, trying to put Adam into an embryo form. They also got Lilith on the 2nd impact.
After the 1st impact, the Angels Adam and Lilith were born.
Adam gave "birth" to the other angels and Lilith gave "birth" to Lilim (Human).

I’m glad you symphatize with Shinji, a lot of people would call him a pussy and stuff, but honestly what would they do if they were put in that situation? Great reaction :] and I don’t know if this is a spoiler but if you don’t want to risk it don’t read it, but you were right about the first angel, Shinji didn’t do anything, it was the Eva.

It’s very cool to see you trying to uncover the mysteries of this show. I myself just watched it in like 3 or 4 days not realy having tyme to collect my thoughts and think about all the details as they kept coming, so with your reactions it seems I’ve a chance to reopen the show to myself and have a frash view on how it is paced.
