I agree. From a narrative perspective it would have been stronger to have Toji die as originally planned, but if you look closely at him in the hospital bed, you can see that he’s missing his left leg and possibly left arm as well. So he was at least permanently damaged by the incident beyond the typical full-recovery-in-a-few-days thing anime usually does for characters "seriously" injured.

"Is Gendo an asshole?" In the series, in a way. In the manga….not gonna spoil
This anime gave my first exposure to such thing, I did not know if I’d be glad that Shinji could fight back or be scared of the constant scream or be creeped out by the strange movement or even why it ate the angel. Damn this anime, man. It changed me back then @_@ Gave me goosebumps and I could really feel my heartbeat the first time I saw this, since I watched it wholeheartedly XD

I love the shot at 10:50, the Eva all of a sudden is like "you w0t mate?" and then goes really primal, especially the scream, almost howling at the moon. This scene exists as a separate scene on YouTube and the comments are hilarious. Worlds number 1 best mum.

    * I love the Shinji-Kaji scene and its kind of a microcosm of the series mentality .In the middle of apocalyptic giant robot fights ( which here are framed as the actual backround of their conversation) the focus is always on the small scale, here 2 characters having a chill but meaningfull talk (with some absolutely beautiful music playing in the backround..the track is called Thanatos i think if you wanted to check it out)..Yeah i really liked that contrast

*Kaji is great. A playboy yes, but a caring, thoughtful person. Probably the most stable adult / positive role model for Shinji in the show — not that the competition is exactly stiff here from #1 Best Dad.

    * Eva 01 didn’t have an S2 engine,(its the thing angels have that gives them unlimited power supply), that’s why it needed a power cable unlike the angels. Remember Nerv was trying to create them artificially? I think they reference it in 17 when the prototype in the US blew up but they never truly explain it

    * The awakend Eva looking at the camera over and through the misty forrest with glowing eyes is some top tier nightmare fuel material..I guess the organic movement and behevior makes it all the more unsettling and scary. Robots arent supposed to move or act like that after all

*Kinda weird how Ritsuko refers to Eva unit 01 as a she

8:45 is one of my favorite moments of the show, as it’s in complete contrast to episode 1. Both Shinji and Gendo are in the same places, but instead of Gendo coercing Shinji into the Eva, Shinji practically demands to be put back in.
So while Shinji can be an aloof, cowardly, glass-half-empty kind of guy, there are moments like these that shows that deep down, he’s heroic, brave, and even a little cool at times.

I think a bit repetitive Shinji to give up flying once more and then change his mind. But it was a great episode, and little by little the true intentions of Shinji’s father are being revealed and the true nature of EVAS.. Great video Liam!

No, no. The Eva manga came out after the anime. In this weird case, the anime is actually the original. Toji did lose a leg. I don’t think it was about censorship.

A great episode indeed, it has everything, every character has it’s moments, the plot is intriguing and animation of the fight is gorgeous. The shift in atmosphere from desperate but heroic struggle to utter terror as the EVA’s true form is revealed is the perfect transition to the last few angle battles. As I said, once Shinji was trapped in the angel in episode 16, the time of Monster of the week is over, pseudoscience by Ritsuko or crazy plans from Misato are not going to save the children anymore, they either fight for themselves or they lose.

Lets just go through the episode and pick up interesting stuff, because I have a hard time structuring this episode.

    1. Rei asking "Why don’t you try to understand your father?"
My point. Toji was HIS friend, not his fathers. People die because of angels all the time, Gendo is the commander, he must look at the bigger picture. Even a 14-year old can understand that. One can’t blame him, he wanted to eject the pilot, it did not work. Because Shinji did not make a decision on his own (At least trying to save his friend) he let others decide FOR HIM. Shinji can’t blame his father for his own inaction, he can’t blame his father for a decision that he has forced him to make. Gendo gave him more than enough time before he activated the dummy, he even tried to talk it out, but Shinji just did not want to do anything.
Shinji is slowly cracking under the pressure and we see first glimps of his … unpleasant inner workings. He is the first do back down and mutter a half arsed "sorry…" not because he feels sorry but because he just doesn’t like conflict. Yet the very few instances he acually roally fucks up he fights tooth to nail to shift blame away from him, unwilling to confront his mistakes. Why? Because that makes him feel bad. Shinji, thus far, is not portrayed as a nice dude because he his righteous or has a strong set of morals, it’s just the easiest way to get through life. Whenever it’s more convinient to be selfabsorbed or a dick he can very well do that too. But of course, we also have growth this episode. There is heroism in that kid, all it takes is people he cares about being in danger and a little peptalk from a much better fatherfigure than his fahter.
That is a great, uncomfortably human character and I look forward to disecting him over the course of the last few episodes.

    2. I’m really happy that you understood what all of this means to bestgirl and her ego. She’s not the focus of the last few episodes but her developement relys so heaviely on the events that it is easy to overlook. I urge you to keep these events in mind, because there is a little bit of a pacing problem with episodes 20-22. We will take a short brake from Asukas arc, do some lore and plot, and then come back later, so the impact of this arc is lessend a bit unless you really keep this fresh in your memory.

Asukas battle scenes make a great comparison to her introduction, an episode I praised for it’s brilliant visual storytelling, if you remember.
Not shown in your video, but I love Asukas "smug" expression when she sits there, all alone expecting the angel. Not the Asuka we know from episode 8, broad shoulders, straight back nose held high. Instead we get her weak attempeds to fool herself that she’s totally cool and will show everyone that she needs neither Rei nor Shinji. Hunched together a bit in hear seat, shadow over her unsure eyes and a weak smile she tries to put on. The almost comical escalation of weaponry goes to show how utterly pointless her struggle really is and just how fragile and powerless she is on her own. It also features one of my favorite pieces of voiceacting in the German dub, Asuka quietly cursing at the angel after she lost her Units head. It catched me totally of guard in a show that was very tame in its language till then but fit her character so perfectly and underlined that her facade has reached its breaking point.

    3. One thing you did not show was Gendo saying: "No, it’s rejecting ME", after 01 rejects the dummy plug. Just pointing that out in case you missed it.

    4. Kaji is just amzing. Great character. Not much depth because not much screentime but it is so nice to see at least one adult with some sort of understanding of emotions. When I was 14, I wanted to be as cool as Kaji.

    5. 9:19 Yep you saw that right guys. Gendo did the crazy Erwin scene before it was cool https://youtu.be/w-QxK1I7Va8?t=175

God i would love to write so much more, this episode is so fucking great. But I don’t want to go even more overboard, as unbelievable as it sounds. 20 and 21 are deep lore episodes so maybe think about past events and obtained information thus far, because you will need every bit you can if you want to get at least some vague sense of what the fuck is going on.
