Neon Genesis Evangelion – Anime Review
Neon Genesis Evangelion – Anime Review
Chiao’s review of Neon Genesis Evangelion, a psychological anime about giant monsters, the fate of the world, and the mindsets of those who are trying to save it. Well, I’m back making some more anime reviews and what better way to start if off than with one that’s extremely polarizing! Oh, wait…

Great review! I agree about each character; they are all extremely well developed and written. But my main dislikes in this anime were the ending and the still scenes. As you mentioned the issue of the still scenes as small in comparison to the whole anime, I agree that they are not so widespread as to take away from the story. But they completely bored me and were extremely distracting from what a scene could have been. For example, the scene where Shinji is at the train station. Keep in mind I haven’t watch this anime since this summer, but it felt like he stood there forever. And I understand the significance of the moment and the complexity of his decision, but the moment dragged on for so long I was so relieved when something actually happened. Hence why I am not a fan of the ending at all. I had, and still have, so many questions about the story and the ending itself. The repetition got too repetitive and downright boring for me. I barely managed to make it through the last two episodes. I know there are movies that are supposed to end the story better, but that doesn’t make up for an anime that lacks a good ending. Perhaps you were able to overlook the ending’s flaws, but for me, I could not. But overall I still thoroughly enjoyed the anime! I just could not stand the end. From what I remember one character would repeat and repeat and repeat (oh the irony of my repetition haha) until I saw no end to it. The lower animation or switch of style did not bother me, it was the lack of actual substance to engage in as all the inner thinking and such became too repeated and old. Curious as to what you think! This is not meant to be like an argument or “hate” comment, I just wanted to share my opinion on the ending that contrasted with yours.

I have no problem with the story and character development. What I cannot stand is a main character who is a huge bitch, my goodness

ending was bad
just bad
plot was unfinished
characters were good
story was good
but animation meh
music meh
opening is good
anime had so many plot holes such as: how the hell a cruise ship can shoot underwater in mouth of an angel?
why the hell 3 of most important human teenages should go to an unsafe ordinary school? and do homework and tell everyone about their job? isn’t their job kinda secret?
whole school thing was stupid
if you’re the only one who can control eva you wouldn’t go to an ordinary school! these teenagers were hopes for humanity for Christ sake!
a show with plot holes and an unfinished ending "Cannot" be a classic
do you want to know how to properly end an story? watch fullmetal alchemist
that anime had a good ending
not this garbage that we don’t know what even happened to all characters and we have to see a movie afterwards
stop worshipping mediocre story telling

I never thought about it, but I could see Mari playing this track (Eve of the Tiger) as she’s reaching the battlefield

I never made it past the first two episodes because I could not find anything to hook me in. I think this review has helped me contextualize what the series is and what it is trying to be. From what I saw, EVA is a character-driven story with elements of philosophy, psychology, and mechs similar in tone to Ghost in a Shell. Overall, I think this was an excellent review.
On a side note, I think John Smith from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was a good "normal guy." Thoughts?

It is not complicated once you learn that this is about damaged people trying to live/survive together. End of Eva is great ending.

hmmm, i loved this anime, because it gave me exactly what I wanted out of an anime…
it started with a wimpy MC, and developed him up to being something Amazing!!
i might as well say it now, i hate anime, that gives little to no development to the MC, and either just makes them unrealistically strong from the beginning, or just makes a wimp for the whole anime and never develops them!
also new subscriber, you’re awesome, hope you are still uploading videos! ?
