Welcome To The Basement” is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn’t know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

Matt, you need to watch Grave of the Fireflies. Some movies should be required viewing for movie buffs such as yourself, no matter how uncomfortable or sad you think they may make you.
Also, if you guys watch another foreign film in the future, please use subtitles instead of crappy American dubs. I can probably count on one hand the number of dubs I have found over the years that were equal to or superior to their original language.

Is Craig out of focus or does he just have a lower resolution camera no him? I was looking closely at his face and the camera seen to focus more on his hands the his face. I have been watching you guys for a while and this videos I noticed more then before. Is it just me or is their something off with Craig’s camera?

Never realized they watched a movie starring Superman after watching a Batman movie. Tim Daly, who provides the voice of the father in My Neighbor Totoro, also voiced Superman/ Clark Kent in the Superman TAS and beyond.

I don’t understand how is this considered his best work… If you ask me Princess Mononoke is 100 times better.
Also, this one is creeping me out. No mater the culture of the nation you can’t tell me that the huge constant smile and the roaring is anything you can call cute or friendly.

I usually really like your show but shouldn’t you have watched the original version of this? Watching dubbed movies is like trying to enjoy non-german stuff on german TV – simply not doable. It takes away so much of the experience.

Very awesome you guys broke into Miyazaki! I would -actually- donate though if you guys watched Porco Rosso. One of his best and I think it would fit Matt/Craig’s style and taste very well.

The mum is suffering from tuberculosis, it’s why the ‘cold’ is such a scare. Miyazaki’s mum suffered from TB, and the reason the story is about two girls is because Miyazaki says it would have been too emotionally hard to make it about two boys.
There is a novel written about Totoro that Miyazaki illustrated that mention that she got TB. Also the hospital she stays at, Shichikokuyama Hospital, was known for dealing with TB patients.
And it is heavily implied by the end credit that she lives, you guys in the comment section. Let happy little film, stay happy, don’t over think it.

I got a chance to see this film on the big screen last week. This is the only film where I left the theatre with more energy than I came in with. most movies I watch either end up satisfied, bored, or tired–but I was literally grinning and giddy. and yes, I saw the subbed version. just the waiting for the bus scene alone, everything about this movie had me watching and genuinely interested.

The dubbed version isn’t very good. All of the original Studio Ghibli movies are wonderful and I highly recommend giving the subbed versions a chance.

An amazing cartoon I just saw: Interstella 5555. I never knew that a movie with zero dialogue could draw me in so much and really have such an interesting story and the music is (obviously) brilliant!

Have you heard the fan theory that Totoro is the god of death, and both Mei and Satsuki get lost and die at the end of the story? Ghibli studios has denied this; but a lot of people still adhere to it. Jessica Nigri even did an awesome costume about that for this last Comicon with an axe that has a Totoro smile along the edge, two eyes above that, if the axe is held with the handle horizontally, and above that, the totoro ears, which in this case are spikes, as you might see in a battle axe.

Have you guys seen "the lobster" yet? I thought the acting was flat, the comedy didnt land, and the social commentary was WAAAAAY too heavy handed. The only good thing about it was the soundtrack. what do you guys think??

Mom has radiation poisoning O_O. Ok maybe not, but that would be a weird twist on a children’s movie that fit the times if the war they’re talking about is WW2.

When Craig started talking about cartoons being the highest art form I was so pumped since that’s actually a belief I hold firmly (for the same reasons he described.)
