I recommend we still call him JD, yes his ID says Joe but it’s much easier to distinguish them between him and Yabuki.

It is really interesting to see how the show completely reverses the realtionship between Boxer and coach compared to Ashita no joe. In this case Nanbu is the one who doesn’t want things to change and is the one who scams people by fixing matches while JD wants to move forward and participating in professional boxing (the tournament) and keeps pestering Nanbu to do so.

I also hope that Megalo Box doesn’t end like AnJ did. I want MB to be different enough to AnJ so that I don’t feel like i am watching a mini version of AnJ

It actually did show a reference to Joe Yabuki. You can clearly see his orange hat in one of the shots in this episode.

    Danpei "for sake of tomorrow"
Nanbu "there’s no tomorrow for us"

Such a contrast personality what Danpei and Nanbu have, still amazing

The ending tagline says not dead yet, I think it’s omnious since Joe’s dies in the original series from his wounds. Given the beating Joe takes from Yuri and the omnious nature of the junk yard dog used in the ending I am assuming that Joe might die.

A lot of references in this episode. I think there was even a Hajime No Ippo reference when Yuri does the hitman stance and hits Junkdog with a flicker jab like Mashiba did to Ippo. Rest are obvious Joe references for Joe fans

Actually while Yuri may seem to not care about JD, in this episode he did state that he would be waiting for JD in *His Ring* and for him to *fight his way to the top* to meet him

This Megalo box is good, but he will never be good as Ashita no Joe. That’s really sad…
