The title "Princess Mononoke" is said to have been created by the staff without telling Hayao Miyazaki. Hayao Miyazaki was surprised to hear the title. It seems that Ms. sewed the traces of Mr. Ashitaka’s shot clothes. At the end, it was written in the storyboard that Ms. Sun would propose. I’m sorry if my English is strange (・・;)

Japan has many Shrines dedicated to "gods". So it could be that the gods in this movie arent just "metaphors" but actual gods the japanese people worship.

I think you forget that this is a Japanese Movie. Anime is the main japanese advertisement for foreigners to get to know japan.
Which means that Japanese animators always include japanese culture and locations in their works.

It’s not a studio ghibli film, but it’s very similiar in the way it’s done

As for studio ghibli there are a lot of good ones lol
Ponyo, Nausicaa, castle in the sky, howls moving castle, totoro, princess kaguya, and when marnie was there are some of the ones I really love

I love that there’s no bad guy in this movie. Nature and Humanity must strike a balance. Humanity can take from nature but it must learn to not be too greedy. Likewise nature must give to humanity and not be too greedy

I still vividly remember being absolutley terrified of Nago and having a nightmare of him. This was before I moved so I was probs in the 1st grade when I first saw princess mononoke and boy- it was my fav studio ghibli- still is- but terrifying (back then, now i love that scene).
Imagine a small cramped bedroom (I live in nyc for ref so ya know, shoebox apartment ✨) and seeing the life of everything around you die as you laid in bed in terror know this mighty God but vengeful God was approaching, and Nago walking through the door and placing a curse on you in that voice at 2:34 and telling you to suffer like he did.
Fascinating. Im now in my junior yr if college but i vividly remember that nightmare. Then again im weird like that and enjoy having nightmares; thrilling

One thing I absolutely love about Miyazaki is that nothing is ever dumbed down to just being black and white, right or wrong, its all grey, which is accurate to reality. Other movies would have had nature being right and people being wrong – environment issues are almost always portrayed this way in media. Not this movie though. The leader of Iron city saved people from awful faiths (the lepers, the brothel women, etc.) and mostly wanted to ensure prosperity to better the life of everyone under her care. The forest beings are seeing their old ways dwindling and their land encroached upon, but they care little for the many lifes they snuff out, as they deem humans to be utterly worthless and irredeemable. They also bicker among themselves and disagree on how to do things to justifiably defend themselves, leading to massive amount of death within their ranks. So depending on who you ask, either side could been seen as evil, but neither really is. The only real bad is the unseen Emperor and his desire for conquest and immortality, but I love the fact that it is only accessory to the story and not the focus. The focus is these 2 sides that are both correct in their own ways, and how ultimately the resolution to the conflict needs to be coexistence, or face annihilation.

Lep-Rah-See. Its mentioned in the bible.. as one of the conditions Jesus supposedly healed. There used to be a "Leper Island" where they’d send people with that infection. Also Monty Python’s "Life of Brian" has a funny bit about Lepers. "Talon for an ex-Leppaaah".

The ‘invention’ of iron was such a watershed cultural moment, and is often used symbolically in fiction and myth. One example is the Hellboy universe, where iron especially hurts ‘old creatures’, as well as Tolkien’s universe, where iron holds a special significance as well.

Leprosy is a pretty insidious disease, because it doesn’t harm the body directly. Instead, it kills you sense of touch, especially your ability to feel pain. Tiny little scrapes and cuts, if not cared for, can get infected and even become gangrenous; and without a sense of touch, you wouldn’t even know you’d been injured. Thus, leper’s bodies slowly decay, not due to the disease, but due to not taking care of themselves. They frequently stink, due to the presence of decaying dead flesh, and advanced leprosy can make a person look almost zombie-like. So, yeah, no wonder they’re shunned.

Yes, there are plushes. Just search for "Princess Mononoke kodama plush" and you’ll find plenty. Word of warning, though, they’re not nearly as cute as the animated version.

Miazaki is a big environmentalist. But, he also realizes that humans have just as much right to the resources of this world as the animals do. So a lot of his productions have big environmentalist themes, but it’s never a case of "nature good, humans bad", rather, it’s more about balance and being responsible.

Japanese words are pronounced how they are spelled. Mononoke = "Moh-Noh-Noh-Keh"

Mononoke means " story about supernatural things " …. it is NOT the name of the wolf-riding human princess ….HER name is " San " …. the working title for the film was " The Legend of Prince Ashitaka " , but it was released as " The Princess’s Supernatural Story " .

I love your reactions! Unfortunately Ghibli is known to take down entire channels of reactions to their movies. It’s sad because they are such great films and watching people react to films that we love and being able to introduce people to new films, is such a joy, especially when the reactor really loves the film too.

I recently started watching Studio Ghibli movies on Netflix. I’ve seen 8 of them by far. And I love every single one of them. Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky are my favourites. Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata are Geniuses. Joe Hisaichi’s Music is so enchanting and lovely to listen.

An interesting aspect of this movie are the lepers. In Japan, people suffering of leprosy were historically utterly octrasized, up to very very recently. Instead of getting care, they were sent to leper colonies and completely isolated from society.
Even after good cures for the disease were developed, this practice continued for a while and the former victims face struggles reintegrating into society. Many stay isolated even now.
The strict laws that were behind these practices were only finally abolished in 1996, a year before this movie came out, so it happened during its development.

I would say including these characters was a very direct commentary on Japanese society.

This is one of the best films ever, not just anime. It’s miles above Spirited Away where you have to watch a child be terrorized for two hours. This is just such a complex story, where all the characters are shades of gray, no cookie cutter heroes and villains.

YOU GUYS!!!! I’m FINALLY back with another reaction video! I am so sorry for the delay, I had technical difficulties (more info in the description) so I had to edit this video in a very different way to try and keep it entertaining for you guys despite the issues. It took me a lot longer than usual to edit because of this.

I also got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out when I was very close to finishing the video, and that left me pretty much bed ridden for almost a week. (It’s been a whole week now and my mouth is still healing from it.) I had a lot of dizziness after the procedure so I only went on the computer to do homework and then went right back to bed because it would hurt my head to look at the screen even in night mode, so that was an unexpected set back as well. Also I have a lot of homework due this week and a midterm on Tuesday so there was just A LOT going on so hopefully my next video will be out a lot sooner lol.

Last thing I wanted to mention, I am experimenting with the amount of ads on my videos. Please just let me know (kindly) if this is an obnoxious amount of ads and/or disturbs the viewing experience and I will put less on my next video if that is the case. Anyway, ted talk over lol. Thank you all so much for watching and for the support despite it taking me so long to get videos out at the moment. Your support means so much to me as making videos is something I really love to do so thank you soooo much and I will see you all in my next video! <3

I really enjoyed your reaction! And I’m glad you were inspired to learn something new. A bit of historical context: leprosy is infectious, and before we had a handle on disease generally, people who got it were sentenced to a slow, agonizing death as various parts of their bodies literally rotted away. These days, it’s curable if caught in a reasonable amount of time (and treatable if not), but in the past the only treatment was to isolate people so that they couldn’t infect others, either in "leper colonies" or left alone to die. Often they would be dehumanized so that the community could cope with sentencing them to this horrible fate. The able-bodied people who walked among them to give them care and kindness were saints, both in the sense of extraordinarily compassionate people and the sense of literal, Catholic saints.

There’s a sub/dub debate here which I’m pretty neutral on. But I will say, the Disney dubs of Ghibli films are top-notch. I’m amused that at the end, we get your dubbed reaction to a subtitled film.

This theme exists in Celtic myths as well: ‘The Great Boar of Ben Bulben’, and the story of the wound that does not heal in the King Arthur mythos.

Having finished the video…you know, I think the technically difficulties accidentally made a better video. It made a really fun, cute video 🙂

The sub that Lady Eboshi says"ruling the world" looks so wrong to me a native Japanese. She actually says "disrupting the realm". The Japanese word 国崩し is not common, and it sounds to most of Japanese people like "destroying the regime" or "leveling the country." More than three-quarters of Japanese national land is dominated by mountains and you have to blow up and level them to cultivate and also she is in fact trying to take power in the political conflict in which time the Imperial regime was loosing its power.

Try Whisper of the Heart followed by The Cat Returns. They are different from this and from each other, but are excellent and connected. In fact there are four Ghibli movies that are LOOSELY connected. Totoro (which shows a side of Japan that is gone), Pom Poko (which shows the end of that era), Whisper of the Heart (which shows life in the result of the end of the Totoro era), and The Cat Returns (which takes a fantasy story from Whisper of the Heart and makes it into its own movie). All are good and all are very different. Of them all my favorites are Totoro (full title: "Tonari no Totoro" or "My Neighbor Totoro") and Whisper of the Heart.

And THANK YOU. Although many of the dubbed versions are just fine, I still prefer the subtitled. If you do Nausicaa (also HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended) I particularly suggest the subtitled version.

Amazing fact it will blow you mind the girl named kaya at the start of the movie is actually ashikata fiance who gave him the locket. Also it is completely confirmed that she was pregnant with his kid. And his descendent from her passed down his legend. The movie name was first supposed to be legend of ashikata. That is why he has more screen time then monoke. You can even check the wiki fandom of girl name kaya it is real. The japanese women hated his character for him being a cheater. He was shown as brother to her for the western audience. Go check the fandom page of girl named kaya.

It’s Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie growing up, it’s not going to disappoint you one of my favorites and I know all the lines to the dubs.
That boar from the beginning is a demon from the west. And Ashitaka is the cursed prince who is trying to lift the curse away. On the journey to the west he meets with the wolf girl named San. And they ended up saving the world in the end. It’s my favorite movie and I watched it 100 or 1,000 times. And the white little guys are called Kodamas, and kodamas are little sprits who lives in the forest and they are for good luck, and that thing that you saw in that glow was the Forest spirit the deer god who gives and takes life’s away. And for San the wolf girl San’s goal was to try and kill lady Eboshi the leader of iron town and in the end Eboshi tries to kill and take out the forest spirit and the deer turns into a headless monster and the princess is the wolf girl.
