My dad always told me something about ghibli movies, most of them are about human destruction of nature.

Every ‘antagonist’ in this video is very much not an antagonist, and the statements on howls moving castle make it seem like you didn’t even watch it, no offense

Fun Fact: the reason why The Cat Returns is so short, because it was meant to be a 2-minute short for a theme park that got scraped, then it became a 45-minute short film until the people making it decided to expand the run time to just over an hour.

I think all the howls criticisms can mostly be summed up as "I don’t understand something for some arbitrary reason therefore it’s bad"

I think you’d have a good time watching Wolf Children (2012). It’s a beautiful tale of moving past grief and finding out who you are. I totally recommend.

I actually agree with howls moving castle. The plot felt like it had no end goal in sight.

Apparently the reason erwig ended so quick is because the author of the original book died before she finished it.

    I don’t blame her

I like airplanes and the whole engineering side of the wind rises so it made me love it a lot more, I think it’s really great and that ending really hits, the only thing I can critique is the film kind of gets confusing, like he’s wanted by the police and goes into hiding, which sure, but then literally a minute goes by and he’s out and about without any explanation

Going to be honest, when you talked about Whisperer of the Heart, I sobbed like an idiot because of how much I also personally connected to it as a writer/creator. Like, I’ve never watched it, but just hearing about it really touched me, and this is coming from someone who really doesn’t get emotional at all for the most part. Sooooo yeah I can see what you mean by it being the best movie in your perspective.

10:10 I’m glad that I’m able to enjoy the movie and the characters but I agree that there is too much that needs to be explained. The main reason for that I’m pretty sure is, that the movie is adapting a book series.
It wasn’t the right books to adapt and there was too much to be properly adapted into one movie
Kiki’s delivery service was also adapted from a book and that probably contributes to why its so good

Laughing at comment about Goro getting disowned after Tales of Earthsea. Apparently, his dad didn’t think that goro had enough experience to direct tales of Earth sea, and goro did not appreciate that. So they stopped speaking during the whole process and production. Hayao went to the premiere, and gave the most tepid review "it was made honestly…it was good."

Also – I get why Whisper of the Heart is #1. I completely agree about everything – especially the Country Road concert. I watched it for the first time at college (anime club) back in 97 or 98 – fansubbed. I even bought a blank video cassette so that the anime club could make me a copy.

Whisper of the heart has been my favourite film ever made since the first time i watched it, but frankly for the longest time i couldn’t put into words why. But the way you described it, how you related to it, helped me realise. Im not much of a writer, but i do make a lot of character designs and comics with said characters(and animations but im still hesitant to do them). This movie gave me a confidence boost that i really needed. To this day this movie is what is pushing me to keep honing my skills.
And because of it, i also unironically enjoy country roads, maybe even love this song just as the movie. Thank you Shaffrillas for making this video.

I don’t know if anyone has brought up similar explications, I just want to bring my own.

    1. I realize that this is your opinion and you don’t hate Howl’s Moving Castle, and yeah, I am sort of salty about that, but I just want to (possibly) clarify some things.

You probably know that Ghibli movies are meant to bring forth a sense of wonder and childhood. And the novel of Howl’s Moving Castle (what the movie is based on) is basically just some minor plot. The Ghibli film adaptation is meant to focus on some of the plot points of the novel but in a more Miyazaki way. In the book, Howl is practically and asshole and a womanizer, but he was changed to fit Miyazaki’s vision for the movie (thats what I assume). The tantrum scene made more sense in the book, as Howl was portrayed as basically a child.

You could have already known this, but I just wanted to point this out. 🙂

I just recently watched The Tale Of Princess Kaguya and I just wanna say that movie is stunning and had me bawling like a baby. When I Remember This Life slaps and makes me miss my loved ones that are gone. But yet its also hopeful somehow and brings up lots of memories. The art is so stunning! Whispers of the heart is a movie i watched in middle school and I fell in love with it. I havent seen every Ghibli film yet but as of now the top 2 on my list are the same as yours!

I feel ghibli movies so deeply that I cried multiple times during this RANKING. Listening to your opinions about them and seeing you highlight some of the most beautiful and heartfealt scenes I’ve ever watched was truly amazing, I got to remember how I experienced them for the first time and feel like I was sharing my excitment about them with someone else.
