Only the last two books. And yeah, badly. But thanks to the bad sci-fi series doing the first two back to back you have the book series.

Howl’s Moving Castle will always be a personal favorite for me. Not only is the animation stunning but I feel that the plot is really interesting and has so many little details hidden in it. I have also read the book and it’s so funny seeing how different the book and the movie are. I love both versions of Howl’s Moving Castle and if you have seen the movie I highly suggest the book

Fun fact: WW2 veterans were expecting Saving Private Rian to be a silly war movie, but left movie theaters crushed by how reallistically it portrayed the horrors of war.
Grave of the Fireflies is Saving Private Rian’s animated counterpart.

I just watched The Cat Returns based on your recommendation. What an incredible movie. If I ever had children of my own, I would want them to see it. It’s so wholesome, classic and just good. It feels like the best part of all the childhood disney movies combined with beautiful art on top. 🙂

I actually quite enjoyed When Marnie Was There, I thought it was a great movie. From what I can tell, Anna isn’t a ding dong to everyone because of the money her parents receive from raising her, but rather it seems that she has depression. She repeats multiple times that she hates herself, and lists a bunch of negative things about herself that aren’t really true, which is a tell tale sign of depression. Anna finding out about checks her parents were receiving probably made her feel sort of not worth peoples time, unless there was some sort of benefit to doing so. Obviously she has deep-seated abandonment issues as well which probably doesn’t help. I thought is was a great representation of depression; the numbness, doing anything to bash yourself, pushing people away. Although, I will say that I was a little disappointed that Marnie turned out to be Anna’s grandma, I thought that their dynamic was cute, and to find out that shipping it would be incestuous was kind of a downer. It could have been done just as well if Marnie wasn’t Anna’s grammy, but oh well. I sort of see it in two different ways; one was the movie of Annas Grandma’s past self, or spirit, or ghost or whatever helping Anna through a tough point in life, and the other was a cute gay little ghost story.

Thank you! I recently rewatched Only Yesterday. I originally gave it two stars, but after rewatching it, it had an ending that seemed to give it redeeming value. I changed it to three stars.

Why Only Yesterday is the worst? It feels engaging, emotional and themes of self identification is so amazing for me. I feel that you’re not really into slice of life films which is understandable.

Ghibli movies are masterpieces. and they’re educational. Every movie delivers a message and brilliantly symbolizes something. Take Chihiro for instance, it depicts the trap of materialism (through her parents) and the journey to grow and become a mature teenager.

This guy doesn’t like movie of Japanese children dying for 2 hrs. He would have given 10 out of 10 stars if it was children from his country. My country is more than 10k 20k kilometres from japan, but i still like the movie and feel the pain of that people during war.

Is funny when someone say the english dub is amazing… that’s just because it reached the level of the original japanese audio, so that’s the standard the original its always the best so why even bother? at least you have some kind of problem reading which would be understanding…

I mean I mainly like it because it was the first ghibli movie I watched (and I was like… 7 at the time), and I haven’t watched it since. so if I watch it now it’s probably gonna be a lot lower on the list… mainly because other movies are just so good

Okay, could not disagree harder about Only Yesterday. It is a bit, niche, but it’s such a wonderful evocation of several recent eras in Japan’s history. Also, the pinapple scene is hilarious! It’s not just that she doesn’t like it, it’s that she went so far out of her way to get her dad to buy this expensive foreign fruit, and then she tries to soldier through, pretending to like it because she feels that’s her duty. But if you look, the pinapple was super green–it was unripe. And so it was bitter as f@#k, and you can see that in her face. Sorry. Rant over.

The thing with Nuasicaa is that while I absolutely love the movie to bits, the manga is just so much more… *fleshed out* .I kinda get why they cut what they cut, but the amount of plotpoints and worldbuilding that gets ingored is just so vast that it feels like the movie is almost *empty* in comparison.
