I find the dragonquest series fit the metaphor; if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. While this works in its favour sometimes, I think we should count our lucky stars that the Dragonquest series isn’t as frequent or else it’s charm would wear off quicker than a Ubisoft IP.
Personally as someone who has played every western release he could get his hands on DQXI is a great game to play and I have done so, getting the ultimate equipment, max lvls etc, and I highly reccommend any lover of JRPGS to get this game.
That being said I do have to point out it’s far from a masterpiece, especially in it’s own genre, soundtrack and audio is nostalgic for any longtime fan and can be appealing to a newcomer while but it’s repetition is getting apparent and I think this needs addressing soon if later installments are to be made.
The characters are nice, aside from a few dere tropes, and I kind of hoped for some a more social aspect of the game to emerge as you travel with these people, but sadly aside from it’s natural progression I don’t really feel a bond with them and it only worsens as the story progresses to the point that they’re there simply just to comment on events happening around them or even when people are talking to you.
it’s story is as generic as it comes not just in comparison to it’s predecessor but a JRPG plot in general and save for a few small moments the game doesn’t really surprise you and even then it’s mostly "well, didn’t see that coming" sort of surprise, nothing really sticks with you.
Also was it me or did the game have a lot of graphical limitations compared to the spin off series Heroes? All spell casting animations save for the exclusive high level ones all feel like they’re cast with the same animation by EVERY character doing the same frontal arm spin.
Not forgetting during story segments when characters would do something out of the norm like clearing an entrance buried by rocks does it go to a black screen with the sounds of shuffles and it’s just done automatically.

Do NOT download the mod. Square Enix contacted my internet provider and had my internet shut off. Luckily I was able to get it back but not without a very serious warning.

I honestly never realised about the music, even the shady boss battle music you were horrified by. I recommend playing in hard mode, my mind was completely focused on how to survive and to optimize every turn that i just enjoyed most of the fights along with the music ^^’

The music is not the best, I’ll agree. But it is not NEARLY as bad as you say it is. We’re gonna have to agree to disagree there.

Loved Dragon Quest 8 back on the PS2, its one of my most played games during that time back in the day. I’ve been waiting on this sequel ever since then which is forever.
So glad its finally here!
Surprised the female characters that join your party doesnt have massive cleavage though. hahaha thats usually how it is.

I see the music choice in Dragon Quest XI more a nostalgic approach – which I’m fine with seeing from that perspective. I also agree that the game was to linear; my biggest issue with the game personally. I love my traditional turn based RPG’s, and Dragon Quest is on the top of that list. I currently have 100+ hours on my play through… I thought that was bad as I’ve been taking my sweet time purposely to get the most out of the game. I’m currently dragging my feet in the "Fortress of Fear" trying to hunt down Metal King Slime’s with the intent to power train before the final boss battle. I love to power train in these types of games. I really enjoy level/stat systems, etc. Anyway… I rambled enough. Last thing… Dragon Quest VIII is my all time favorite in the series.

I never tried DQ because I didn’t really like Toriyama’s style as a kid (not a fan of dragon balls at all), I feel bad now, I’ll give this one a try! Thank you for such a convincing video man.

Sorry, the music for a 100h RPG is a deal breaker.

Man Blurred Block at 10:27 is my favorite party member by far. No other character in this game or any other could even come close

Did this get better after hendrik joins? I was forced to have him in my party and I think that was the worst decision this game made he is the worst companion I think I could ever have and I honestly can’t even stand to pick up the game anymore knowing I have no choice but to deal with him the entire game it’s so depressing

11:26 Yes, these are the literal best samples they could’ve obtained, and that is because of the Draogon Quest composer’s massive ego and his hold on his own copyrights. Yes, he’s that old, that stubborn and actually the sole reason why this game was released with such poor music quality.

That was a perfect review. I’ve played the game for 156 hours (still counting) and that was exactly my experience as a JRPG and DQ fan. It’s an incredible game. I love the story, the graphics, the battle system and the whole DQness of it. But more often than not I find myself playing with a low volume. I can only imagine how the game would have been even better if we had gotten a soundtrack worth it. As you said DQ VIII was a magical experience. I love the music as much as I love the game. When the VIII intro appeared in the video, I got goosebumps. You can just feel the difference. XI is an improvement on many things from VIII but the music isn’t one of them. Hopefully they will get that right on XII. Thanks for the video man!

Thank you for reviewing it once you’ve put in 100+ hours into the game. That kind of effort really familiarizes you with the game and helps to give an exacting review.

What the fuck!? Ill wait for the next one.
I really just want a DQ3-like release. The franchise could not have strayed further from this since 5 or 6. Dragon quest… Is sort of dead to me. Im glad the kids like it.

The music in DQ XI is definitely sub-par. Way below the quality of its predecessors.

I wonder if the reason everyone is hating on XII so much because we were spoiled with the orchestral soundtrack with VIII unlike Japan who got the midi music.

I thought the game was great, but the combat is extremely easy, even with the hard mode turned on. This, in the end, was what made me quit the game before finishing. No review seems to mention the lack of challenge in the game, so I’m wondering – is it a JRPG thing? Most western RPGs I have played have considerably challenging combat and at the very least let’s you turn up the difficulty.

I’m dying to play it! From the reviews, the only disappointment I have is that there are no darker skin characters (in dragon quest 9 you could make dark skin characters). It’s a shame, but understandable considering it’s a Japanese game, and the game is popular primarily in Japan I’m not complaining. It won’t make the game less enjoyable.

Game was near perfect. Only thing I didn’t like was, since there was so many characters, it was a bit too easy. I remember trying a bunch of times just to beat Dolmagous in DQ8, I only had to try once for the boss on this one. Or it could just be because I’m older, I may be better and smarter, who knows?

? the Ni No Kuni II shade is real!! That meme was priceless, that’s exactly how I felt. Oh man, I held off on getting DQ XI cause I wanted to finish Ni No Kuni II first and focus on western games for the fall, like RDR2. The former was a great disappointment. Not a bad game, I had fun with it, but it was no comparison to the love affair I had with its predecessor, which has a phenomenal, highly memorable, and surprising story. It’s sequel’s story, I either can’t sum up at all, or could sum up in one lame sentence. Just really dull. And for all it’s technically impressive moments and presentation……… DQ XI comes along and made it look like it was some rushed game. So what that makes FF XV…. not a game at all… worse? DQ XI, it took my some weeks and dozen or two hours to get really into it, but once the core 7 party is formed, and their identities made clear, the game took off like a rocket of perfection. Now I’ve put in 200 hrs and have the Platinum trophy, and I’m eager to do it all again on Switch!!!

Thanks for this review. I never played Dragon Quest but when I saw the gameplay trailer, I love the environments, the characters, etc. I’m getting the Switch version so I can play it in portable mode 🙂 Can’t wait, I heard the Switch version have some extra content as well!

The music can get mind numbingly repetitive. Mainly because songs are too short so they loop too often. This is by far the worst part of the game.

I have not seen or heard one complaint from anyone other than myself about how damn easy this game is. It ruined it for me to be able to steam roll powerful enemies/bosses. I quit halfway through. Shame too, I really wanted a healthy replacement for my lost love with FF

4:08 That is NOT localization. All they did was they TRANSLATED Jap to EN for an International release, which has nothing to do with localization, which is a different thing on its own; a translation curated to fit a specific region that a translation is being made for. Localization takes all kinds of things into account, such as cultural influences, regional dialects etc.; it’s translation with the purpose of making sure that the country (or people) its being translated for can get the full grasp of the original’s language nuances. Please don’t confuse the two.

just a pitty the pc version is in need of an optimisation patch and new min/max specs listings as Se lied about the specs(i can play it on max on a pc that doesnt meet min requirements with a stable 60fps for instance) and hasnt bothered with optimisation patches at all that i can see.

Been a HUGE Jrpg fan all my life, but do like the RPG as well and some times better depending on the game. Along with crazy humor games, open world, and story or strong narritive games. Just now hearing from the channel due to a friend so subbing and looking forward to your take on so many gems (cold steel for example0 making its why to the west ps4 shores this year). I wish DQ10 would come out here I would sub for life (it is their mmo) but you can play alone or with people. (you can use offline player characters among a pool for AI help if you suffer from anxiety or prefer solo play. THIS game just edged out DQ8 as my second favorite DQ game now of all time. It is just a love letter to the jrpg fan in my view. Thanks for the time this took to script, edit and upload. Just wish you had 15 to 25k subs so you would make more $ for this type of quality (videos)
