The rebuild movies start out as a remake and then veer way off into an alternate storyline/sequel?? Its not clear. But theres a ton of original stuff in there.

Never before have I wanted to pop into a prerecorded conversation on the internet as much as with that Eva conversation, they left out so much to discuss, gosh, haha.

The issues weren’t just budget related, but deadline related too. There was an episode that had to be scrapped and rewritten at the last minute because the plot was coincidentally too similar to an actual terrorist attack.

"OVA’s are basically recaps of entire series".
There are OVAs like that? All i find is short schlocky stuff from the 80’s, and single episode supplements to already popular shows, usually with a more lax attitude to graphic depiction of violence and/or sex.

The merging of man and machine aesthetic may have entered western pop culture through anime, but the concept is very much 80s William Gibson sci-fi literature.

A small correction Liam, the trobles with the last few episodes of Eva were not due to budget, but do to schedule issues and late changes to scripts, in part because Anno constantly rewrote shit and because a terrorist atack (from a christian apocalyse cult even, or something like that) in japan made them make some last minute changes to late in production episodes that needed to be scraped because it resembled the event too much.
The budget was not much of a problem really, especially on the earlier parts of the series, there’s a lot of impressive but subtle animation going on that could not be done without a reasonable budget.

Loved how the improv recap had George struggling, while Liam was on point and expanded on the details. On the other hand, I’m surprised Liam didn’t know about OVAs. Those were a huge format to release anime on during the 80s and 90s and continue to occasionally be used, albeit not nearly as popular as it used to be, but it’s also used for stuff like Gunbuster and FLCL. Then, you’ve got Gundam Thunderbolt and Unicorn. Don’t forget Patlabor, Read or Die, Hellsing Ultimate… The list goes on. If anything, movies are used for recap, such as Death and Rebirth for NGE and the recap trilogy of the original Gundam series that pushed it into the popularity it has today. So Liam, please don’t misinform George about OVAs because they generally are shorter than the regular sized TV anime, which is a quicker watch for George.
Also, there’s a huge rabbit hole for you to dive down for NGE, George. Just go to the EvaGeeks wiki. Hell, check out Hideaki Anno’s other works. He’s just a really good director.

So something that wasn’t brought up about the Epic Games Store thing is that I simple don’t want to support Epic. I don’t want to give money to a company that calls their Q&A staff "bodies" and features about the most crunch in the industry to make regular updates to a simple game about manipulating children into buying cosmetics because they would otherwise get bullied by the other ones in school that have cosmetics. And I especially don’t want to support Tencent that lives on manipulative microtransactions and has a 40 to 50 per cent share of Epic.

Any Chance you are going to talk about one of kyoto Animation Studios being burned down next week?
I feel that they had a massive impact on modern anime as well, to be more specific, about the moe Artstyle and how to market anime nowadays.
Anyway, great episode. Would’ve loved more matt, but it’s always the same with him…

1:28:13 OVAs are rarely recaps, they’re usually standalone episodes that weren’t produced at the same time as the mainline series (sometimes completely independent from any other series)

As a german I’ll get really aggressive over Liams pronounciation of Seele, which is the german word for soul. the japanese transcription would be : ゼーレ.

You have no idea how much validation Ive been feeling these past weeks from all my favorite content creators experiencing Evangelion for the first time. And seeing all the theme and philosophical discusions that happened back then in seedy internet forums happening out in the open in internet public is so great to see.
Even with the revelations and reinterpretations that happen as people find out new thins like George with EVA 02=Yui. What a time to live. Cheers and have a great day.

I watched Eva for the first time not long ago, shortly before Netflix getting the rights was announced. I watched some awful bootleg version where the subtitles started off awful and ended completely incomprehensible. I still really enjoyed the show though, despite missing quite a few plot points thanks to the bad subs, and also never really having watched any real amount of mecha stuff beforehand. But I could see what it was doing, as I could tell the sorts of things it was riffing on, and how the direction it took was so impactful. I really appreciate the downer ending too. It’s actually kind of refreshing to watch something that doesn’t have a happy ending, and it is the perfect way to cap off the themes the show was building towards. It’s a vicious and scathing critique of the genre and how fans interact with a work, but done in a way that feels totally internally consistent. It does existential horror both on a close personal scale, and on a huge cosmic scale and lands both. The middle of the show does drag quite a bit, but I think that’s intentional to lull you in to a false sense of security, so when the shit does hit the fan, it has much more impact. Also perhaps it works better for people who are actually in to that genre.
And George, watch FLCL. It’s 6 episodes and amazing, and from the people who made Eva.

I have autism and I would have to say that I have accidentally used my mother’s card on my Xbox 360 but I did buy an Xbox gamerpoints card and I thought I bought Halo 3 with the Xbox card but I accidentally used my mom’s card and I bought like the game and the dlc (which racked up to $70) but i know better and autism varies with person to person so yeah I can understand that some autistic children (even over the age of 18) will accidentally do retarded things and they don’t know or didn’t mean to do it but shit why is it so easy to drop money on things, I wish there were two warning screens that tells you to put in a password and a key number to make it so that you don’t accidentally purchase that super duper ultra mega dildo that you or your children did not want…. I mean I might’ve bought a dildo thinking it was a lightsaber but that was another time In a shittier place and im not talking about the shitty lightsaber dildo that I bought and did not use ??

Maybe it’s because I’ve internalized the Japanese style of derivative concepts and unstated meaning thoroughly enough because I’ve consumed so much anime/manga in my life, but I found the original Evangelion TV series and End of Eva to be on the mid-tier end of difficult-to-digest creative works, compared to Devilman Crybaby, Gasaraki, .hack//SIGN and such, only because Hideaki Anno was skilled enough of a storyteller that comprehending the more mindscrewy aspects of Eva in that era required but a mere switching of frameworks of understanding to achieve. Pre-Rebuild Eva is NOT that hard to understand, IMHO, but it unfortunately requires a lot of metatextual reading to achieve that understanding – shit like Gainax’s budget running out, how Anno expresses his interpretation of the nature of human interaction and manifestations of depression in the character drama, his love of Ultraman influencing the 5-minute operation time ticker for the Evas, smart shit like that.

In hindsight, Warframes are just small Evas. Too bad for Shinji that he never learned to take an ugly, broken thing, and take away its pain.
