That excuse for Shinji having inconsistent characterisation seems very similar to how a lot of casuals defend any sort of random behaviour that goes on with a lot of shounen characters.

I didn’t realize this show was heavily criticised for its animation. I thought it was fine for the time.

A solid review overall though. I thought the show was decent enough, but EoE really did have its head shoved too far up its own arse.

ACTUALLY if you read one of the quotes from the director, there is no CHRISTIAN SYMBOLISM at all in evangelion!

as i quote, ""There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us. Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.""

therefore proving the bullshittery of most of the people who thrive and love the pretentious nature of eva, because most of the time the director and them arent looking at the same direction. when the director interprets a character walking down a hallway to reach his destination, the bullshittery audience who thinks eva is a "deep show" dissects this into character drama, development, and shit other major change in story element when it’s really just a person going from point a to point b.

THUS WHEN YOU SAY there are two groups on the pretentious nature and say neither of them are correct. i disagree. if a show isnt deep and you’re worshipping it for being deep, you’re contradicting the nature of the show itself. AND THEREFORE ARE WRONG! accuracy is very important to a side and with the pretentious haters able to see more EYE to EYE than the bullshittery aspect of the worshippers, we also have another point up from the worshippers. THEREFORE the ones being able to recognize that it’s psychological side is unfitting and leads the ending incomplete are the ones ON THE RIGHT!

6:15 YO YOU LISTED ALL THE REASONS WHY HE ISNT A WUSS. why you going back on your statement? that’s not wussy at all. that’s just common sense. anyone who calls shinji a wuss DEFINITELY will do the same as shinji has done in that kinda situation. they’re hiding behind their keyboard too much and not putting themselves in the actual situation shinji is in to realize why he’s hesitating heavily. everytime he pilots the eva, he hurts people. he pisses off his classmate for hurting his sister, he gets yelled out and strains relationships, etc, etc. now to put this in real life terms, imagine this. everytime you try to talk, you get ignored. and your mom and dad are telling you to make friends. but as you try harder and harder, your classmates still ignore you and pretend you don’t exist. DOESNT THAT UFKCING HURT! exactly. if you wanna know wusses in anime, look no further than future diary. BUT IF YOU CALL SHINJI A WUSS, you completely don’t understand the story and therefore don’t even deserve an opinion.

ok your statement on the meaning of evagelion and how it’s about flawed and imperfect humans is RIGHT ON THE DOT! jezzus that was a great realization and statement.

Actually the whole budget thing is just a widely accepted rumor, you see the production of Evangelion was pretty unique unlike most Anime at the time and especially now, because you see Anno actually writes the episodes as he goes along. And while this isn’t a bad thing as there are many examples of successful and critically acclaimed Anime that have this sort of thing, just look at any manga made by Shonen Jump. But because of the deadlines Anno had more and more difficulty with trying to finish each and each scenario and the animation staff had to animate as much as they can in house. Plus coupled with Anno’s decreasing mental state causes some of the animation issues that are infamously known to this day.

I’m also quite confused by how everyone makes it out to be completely incomprehensible. Even the final two episodes – though abstract – were very straightforward with their themes and purpose. In all honesty, the most confusing parts of the show weren’t the "mindfuck" scenes, but rather the complex lore. The whole stuff with the Dead Sea Scrolls, Seeds of Life and such.

I’m not saying its simplicity is a bad thing, I really enjoyed the uncompromising straightforwardness of it all. I especially enjoyed how subversive it was, and I really loved Shinji as a main character.

Also, this review was absolutely stellar. Hoping for more stuff in the future.

I have way too much to say about Evangelion and I’m kind of saving it for the day I decide to make a review (that hopefully doesn’t cause my laptop to implode on itself), but I did really like this review. You keep an open-minded, rational and slightly humorous view on the show in general and cover the important aspects. I also really like how you explain that "Evangelion is only as difficult to explain as the fans make it out to be" because in my opinion that’s very true. Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime, or one of three favorites, so I’m glad you took a decently objective view on it – it’s probably the best review of the show on this site at the moment.
Oh, and the additional animation really gives yourself an identity. Swag points to you.
All in all: Yay more Evangelion reviews <3333.

This is literally the best NGE review on youtube so far. Thank you for being fair. It’s my favorite show ever–but I loved it because I thought it was a simple human drama and a simple message about perception of our world and ego (sounds so complicated when I put it like that). Very fair criticism, good style too. Liked it a lot.
