Hiya! In case you can’t tell from my screen name, I’m a huge Eva fan. I’m not gonna hate on you for disagreeing with me, but I got some things to say about your review.

1.) The hospital fap scene. I have the DVD and it isn’t at all censored like you showed. They show everything. Did you get a bad copy of the DVD or something?
2.) The list of questions you have does have answers, it’s just that the answers aren’t explicitly stated and you gotta figure it out on your own. Annoying, I know. But in Rebuild, they don’t keep things as vague (Kaworu outright explains Human Instrumentality in the 3rd movie). Also, Rebuild DEFINITELY tones down on the teenage angst. Oh, and there is a plot twist that changes everything.
3.) That last bit about baseball. Was that a parody, or were you being serious? I can’t tell.

Anyway, like in my 2nd point, Eva can be interpreted in different ways since they never clearly answer some questions (well, they do in Rebuild). The reason I like the series so much is because if you interpret it the same way I did, Evangelion is a giant middle finger to otakus who obsess over dating sims and Imaginary Cartoon Girlfriend Anime™. These are people who are cowards and can’t deal with reality and mean people who can be monsters (like the Angels), so they "run away" to a fake world where girls act all moe and not human at all. This is made apparent in one of the last 2 TV episodes where Shinji creates a reality similar to a high school romance anime, but rejects it because "it doesn’t feel real".

And this message is more poignant today more than ever. Did ya hear about that stupid asshole who "married" Hatsune Miku because girls were mean to him? Yeah, that guy definitely fails at "getting inside the robot" and dealing with scary "Angels".

I agree the original Eva can be pretentious, like when random words like "RAPE" and "MENSTRUATION" flash across the screen. Nothing is perfect, but Eva does have it’s merits which is why people still talk about it to this day. People tend to forget shit shows like Love Hina. When was the last time you heard anyone recently discussing that? It’s forgettable shit, unlike Eva.

God damn the dub of this movie is so terrible. I normally never complain about dubbing quality but in EoE it’s nearly inexcusable. For the longest time I thought I was watching a shitty fan dub. The Scooby doo blood splatter sounds are particularly awful

Happy to say I am fully converted and "EoE" is my 5th favourite film of all time, just under "Eraserhead", "The Passion of Joan of Arc", and every film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.

The Netflix dub better not fuck up.

I know this is an old video, but just to answer your question about the existence of SEELE…

    **deep inhale**

In the beginning, there were the Fist ancestral race. The First Ancestral Race sent seeds of life throughout the universe. There were two types of seeds: Adam and Lilith. They were sent out into the universe inside of an artificial moon, or “egg”.

Adam’s seed bore the fruit of life, which are the “Angels”, while Lilith’s seed bore the fruit of wisdom and knowledge, which are all the life forms of earth. These two different life forms could not co-exist on the same planet. The reason being is that if the two beings were to merge, they would create life forms equal to or greater than the First Ancestral Race. So, in the instance two seeds fell on the same planet, each seed came with a sort of failsafe, The “Lance of Longinus”. We know these things because within these moons, or eggs, a record of where they came from and how these beings operate was included. They’re referred to as “The Dead Sea Scrolls”(No relation to the actual Dead Sea Scrolls)

Of course, planet earth ended up with two seeds.

Lilith’s seed, coming after Adams, created The First Impact. When Lilith collided with earth, her spear was lost, and her “LCL” was spilled across the earth. At this time Adam had not began to create life, so Adam’s spear was activated, prohibiting him from doing so.

**everything from this point on has been cited from Reddit user /u/LibraryLass. It conveys SEELE’s intentions better than I could, and I’m tired of typing. 😛 Thanks, LibraryLass.**

“Sometime after WW2, an organization called SEELE discovered Lilith’s body along with her Dead Sea Scrolls. SEELE interpreted the Scrolls and concluded that a being with both the Fruit of Knowledge and the Fruit of Life would be essentially all-powerful and immortal. SEELE intended that this being should house their consciousnesses. In order to house all of them, the separation between individual humans would have to be erased– SEELE may or may not have intended for this to only happen to them, or else to all of humanity. This is the Human Instrumentality Project. Basically everything from this point on is their attempt to fulfill the project, except for the things which were attempts by others to hijack the project for their own goals. The existence of the First Ancestral Race and the Seeds of Life was kept secret from everyone except NERV.”

“The first step in SEELE’s plan was to wake up Adam, then use the Spear of Longinus to regress him into a fetal state. The Katsuragi expedition, led by Misato’s family, was chosen to fulfill this step of the plan. When Adam was awakened, the first thing it did was start breaking down the AT fields of life on earth, causing a major cataclysm that killed a third of the world’s population instantly, with another billion dying in wars or starving as a result. This was Second Impact, which SEELE covered up as being the result of a meteor strike in Antarctica.”

“Part of the Katsuragi expedition involved a contact experiment in which human DNA was merged with Adam. At the site of Second Impact, three living things were recovered: Misato (who had been put in a capsule by her father to protect her), the now-embryonic and weakened Adam, and Kaworu, who was the result of Adam merging with human DNA (donor unknown). SEELE recovered Adam’s soul and put it into Kaworu. All according to plan so far for SEELE.”

“SEELE had been experimenting with cloning Lilith for a while, creating Evangelions, which would be necessary to house their consciousness at the fulfillment of the Instrumentality Project. They also knew that Adam would produce a number of angels while he was awake to try to recover him so that he could finish nullifying the AT fields of all life on Earth and go back to fulfilling his program to seed the earth with Angels, so they needed the Evangelions to kill those angels before they could reach Adam or Lilith (who if an Angel merged with her would have done about the same thing), and also to provide them with a Fruit of Life to put in one of the Evas. Eva-01 was created from Lilith with the intent of being used as SEELE’s/humanity’s new body, the rest were created from Adam.”

“Gendo and Yui Ikari, Shinji’s parents, were members of SEELE. However after Shinji was born, Yui decided she could not go through with the Human Instrumentality Project if success came at his expense. Therefore she initiated a second Contact Experiment with Unit-01, merging her soul with its body in order to protect him– this is what happens when Unit-01 goes berserk, she’s in there fighting for her son’s life. Her ultimate intention was to make sure that if any consciousness was in charge of Instrumentality, it would be Shinji’s. Seemingly losing his wife drove Gendo insane and made him decide to deviate from the project in a way that would put him in charge of Instrumentality so that he could bring Yui back. He needed an alternative Kaworu that would be loyal to him, so he created Rei from Yui’s DNA combining with Lilith and her soul.”

“However Gendo didn’t anticipate that his plan was running contrary to Yui-as-unit-01’s, or that both Rei and Kaworu would love Shinji and judge him as being the one to control Humanity’s destiny after Instrumentality ahead of Gendo.”

If I was put into Shinji’s position as a 14 year old boy, I would be just as whiny and helpless. Shinji never grew up with a mother and had an estranged father who never wanted to bond with Shinji…how do you expect him to be a confident teenager during an apocalypse when he had no positive role models in his lifetime to teach him how to be strong. I feel like every person who complain about Shinji’s characteristics are people who know nothing about the human condition at all.

Wow… this video really makes me think Bennett has come a long way as a critic not having seen much of his old work. Even when I disagree with his assessment of a work (as I really REALLY do here) I usually find his takes insightful and interesting. THIS was close to cinemasins-ish levels of dumb lazy criticism, in fact as he even says in the video it’s literally every (kinda dumb) criticism people have been making forever.

  35. Christian Del Rosario
    May 6, 2019 @ 2:45 pm

It’s alright to hate the anime because of the questions you did not answer.

But hating the scenes like gendo placing hands inside rei, or Asuka and Shinji’s characters are out of the question. It’s supposed to be like that.

Instead of bashing the scenes, you should have just asked the 2000 questions in this 30minute video. And try to get answers from fans.

5 years after posting this "review video" i hope you really had the list of 2000 questions.

Hey as a fan of Eva, the show has an amazing amount of symbolism, iconography and theology that can be read into to show a truly deep and honestly fascinating story, but that’s simply what can be read into as a fan that ignores the show for what it is on the surface and views it as what it really is, fan theory in action, when you take the core components of Eva you can create one of the most interesting and truly fascinating stories seeped in judeo Christian mythology and lovecraftian horror but at the end of the day everyone has to remember that the show really isn’t that good as a whole and all of those elements were quite literally put in because the creator thought they looked cool and has admitted to such.
