WHAT IS A FOOLY COOLY?!
This is a question that’s been permeating my cranial mass since the invention of the Slap-Chop. For years, the legend of the “fooly cooly” has been the subject of discussion among the elite minds throughout the galaxy. From the sullen lands of the beaver people, to the cosmic wonderland of the Jellians (jelly people), the answer has and still is beyond the reach of the most intelligent of mortals. Lord only knows what such splendors may be brought upon when our galactic hive-mind finally seizes the truth about “fooly cooly,” but until then, we are doomed to be eradicated by constant attacks by the burger monsters of Sintax 47-34-69B12.
We’ve searched and searched, but the goal seems only farther than anticipated. We need a new weapon. A weapon the can propel us towards the edge of our evolutionary potential and achieve the holy might of “fooly cooly.” Guitars… I think we need guitars. And sandpaper and glue and meth made of candy-corn apple trees. YEAH! AND INSTANT REPAIR BUCKETS AND SLIM JIMS AND HONEY MADE FROM BRICKS! Yeah, those will work. Hey guys, let’s fucking throw a fooly cooly party! FOOLY COOLY! We must push ourselves and the way we do that is to prepare for the coming diabetic brigade storm! What’s a diabetic brigade storm?! I DON’T FUCKING KNOW, JUST ROLL WITH IT YOU JUMBO PLEB.
I even made a review of something else called Fooly Cooly. I don’t know why there’s already an anime called Fooly Cooly, but I don’t care! PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY!!! AKAGI, WHERE ARE THE GODDAMN INSTANT REPAIR BUCKETS?! I WANT TO REPAIR MYSELF WITH GREEN SHIT! AKAGI! AAAAAAKKAAAAAAAAAGIIIIIIII!! WE ARE ABOUT TO WATCH MY REVIEW OF FOOLY COOLY! GET YOUR SHIP ASS OUT HERE! AND BRING THE BUCKETS… AND SAMMICHES! We must go forward towards a new dawn and ride into the astral belt in search for “fooly cooly.”
HARDER, BETTER FASTER, STRONGER! IT’S FOOLY COOLY TIME!

Oh FLCL, One of the few Bluerays I actually rewatch over and over. I loved this when I was a younger kid. Samurai Champloo and this really shaped those late nights.

FLCL is one of those anime that I can just watch over and over again. Partly because it’s so short while also being fulfilling unlike most series where I watch season after season for a feeling of fulfillment to finally reach me, but rarely ever get it since they stop making the series or because they draw it out so long that I just drop it. But the main reason FLCL is so enjoying is because I can pick up on knew things that I hadn’t before each time I watch it.

What a great review. I really do adore the series. Probably one of my favorite if not my favorite anime I’ve seen. The series hit me hard like a stray baseball.

Says he doesn’t have a musical cue for the intro, followed by the piece of Pillows music that brings back the sweet nostalgia of randomly tuning into this anime in 2003
I didn’t, and still don’t, even like anime all that much. My mom let me stay up to watch family guy one night, and after she went to bed I didn’t wanna stop watching after that, so I turned the volume down and sat nice and close to the ole tube TV we still hadn’t upgraded from.
I wish I’d of kept the VHS tape I recorded that on (commercials and all) during the series second run on Adult Swim. Ugh, I hate nostalgia.
The feels are real folks.

I remember catching the last 10 minutes of FLCL on Adult Swim years and years ago, at a time when I’d tried to ditch "childish" things like anime, and I remember thinking to myself "What the hell was that, this is why I don’t like anime."
Flash forward to about 6 months ago, when I’d started watching anime on Netflix and found that I really enjoyed it and appreciated the adult themes in stories in the medium. I remember looking for a few classics to buy and since FLCL’s on that list, I bought the Blu-ray and loved every second of it. When I got to that last 10 minutes I immediately recognized it and remembered how stupid I was for trying to be someone I wasn’t, and thus denying myself something that, had I given it a chance, I would have really enjoyed.

I first watched FLCL about 3 years ago (when I was 17). It was really underwhelming from what I can remember. However, some of what you said and the visuals in this review do make me want to rewatch it someday. That probably won’t be for a long time, but I do want to try and reevaluate it. 🙂

Pretty good review. To be honest though, I think you over-analyzed the show. I do think there’s more to it than just ti being mindless insanity but I think you took it too far. Either way it was a good video.

My love for this anime is unending. I revisit it every few months and always catch something new. The things that leave the biggest impressions on me are the music & the facial expressions. It’s like they took actual human expressions and made them better. You could watch a scene and guess what they’re talking about just by the expressions. In most anime today, I doubt the animators even know how a real face works…

Really liked your points about Ninamori and how the crazy events are the backdrop for the slower scenes, the real meat of the story.
I wrote an article a while back on how FLCL works as a coming of age story. Would love to hear your thoughts on it. http://www.ign.com/blogs/fiercealchemist/2014/03/14/coming-of-age-fantasy-vs-reality-in-flcl

Jeezus 2000-2001 I can’t believe how old this show is. Hell the English release isn’t that much younger at 2003. Damn I was in 3rd grade when this aired in the US. No wonder I don’t remember this at all. Someday I’ll have to go back and watch this.
