Oh FLCL, One of the few Bluerays I actually rewatch over and over. I loved this when I was a younger kid. Samurai Champloo and this really shaped those late nights.

FLCL is one of those anime that I can just watch over and over again. Partly because it’s so short while also being fulfilling unlike most series where I watch  season after season for a feeling of fulfillment to finally reach me, but rarely ever get it since they stop making the series or because they draw it out so long that I just drop it. But the main reason FLCL is so enjoying is because I can pick up on knew things that I hadn’t before each time I watch it.

What a great review. I really do adore the series. Probably one of my favorite if not my favorite anime I’ve seen. The series hit me hard like a stray baseball.

Says he doesn’t have a musical cue for the intro, followed by the piece of Pillows music that brings back the sweet nostalgia of randomly tuning into this anime in 2003

I didn’t, and still don’t, even like anime all that much. My mom let me stay up to watch family guy one night, and after she went to bed I didn’t wanna stop watching after that, so I turned the volume down and sat nice and close to the ole tube TV we still hadn’t upgraded from.

I wish I’d of kept the VHS tape I recorded that on (commercials and all) during the series second run on Adult Swim. Ugh, I hate nostalgia.

    The feels are real folks.

I remember catching the last 10 minutes of FLCL on Adult Swim years and years ago, at a time when I’d tried to ditch "childish" things like anime, and I remember thinking to myself "What the hell was that, this is why I don’t like anime."

Flash forward to about 6 months ago, when I’d started watching anime on Netflix and found that I really enjoyed it and appreciated the adult themes in stories in the medium. I remember looking for a few classics to buy and since FLCL’s on that list, I bought the Blu-ray and loved every second of it. When I got to that last 10 minutes I immediately recognized it and remembered how stupid I was for trying to be someone I wasn’t, and thus denying myself something that, had I given it a chance, I would have really enjoyed.

I first watched FLCL about 3 years ago (when I was 17). It was really underwhelming from what I can remember. However, some of what you said and the visuals in this review do make me want to rewatch it someday. That probably won’t be for a long time, but I do want to try and reevaluate it. 🙂

Great job analyzing the series. From a critical analysis standpoint (considering the subject) I am very impressed.

Pretty good review. To be honest though, I think you over-analyzed the show. I do think there’s more to it than just ti being mindless insanity but I think you took it too far. Either way it was a good video.

My love for this anime is unending. I revisit it every few months and always catch something new. The things that leave the biggest impressions on me are the music & the facial expressions. It’s like they took actual human expressions and made them better. You could watch a scene and guess what they’re talking about just by the expressions. In most anime today, I doubt the animators even know how a real face works…

Really liked your points about Ninamori and how the crazy events are the backdrop for the slower scenes, the real meat of the story.

I wrote an article a while back on how FLCL works as a coming of age story. Would love to hear your thoughts on it. http://www.ign.com/blogs/fiercealchemist/2014/03/14/coming-of-age-fantasy-vs-reality-in-flcl

Jeezus 2000-2001 I can’t believe how old this show is. Hell the English release isn’t that much younger at 2003. Damn I was in 3rd grade when this aired in the US. No wonder I don’t remember this at all. Someday I’ll have to go back and watch this.
