I went on a Ghibli streak this year, seeing many of them for the first time, and there hasn’t been a single dud yet. And nearly every Miyazaki has been a masterpiece. I’m so glad you guys got to share this movie. Please do more Ghibli! When I watched “Kiki’s Delivery Service” earlier this year I had hearts in my eyes all the way through, so I think it would be great for you guys to react to.

I was 27 when this came out and it is a favorite of *mine*. Really perhaps one of Miyazaki’s best stories.
(That said, you both need to watch his earliest films: Laputa, Nausicaa, and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro.)

Very happily surprised to see a Ghibli reaction video. I heard the studio was very restrictive on their movies.
Cool to see you enjoy this! Nice role reversal with Jessa being the one not seeing the movie before.

Jessa : “SuperBook and Flying House are legit!!” 😄 …- Don’t worry Jessa, my siblings and I used to watch those too. I hope this is not your first and last Miyazaki film, because all of them are great!! … And Alex confessing She used to have a crush on Haku is like the cutest thing…

It’s funny every time I watch this movie years later I completely forget the plot, only remember the visuals, then when I’m reminded of what happens I get completely emotional again and immediately forget what it’s about. Repeat into infinity.

As someone who loves onigiri, the rice balls here, they are absolutely DELICIOUS. Culturally they are to the Japanese what sandwiches are to say an American and were usually filled with salty or sour things (like pickled plums) that also act as a preservative allowing them to be carried for a surprising length of time before going bad. My favorite flavors though are salmon or bonito.

This is the only Miyazaki film I saw in the theater. It’s good but not a masterpiece like his other films.

Why English dubs?? Original versions with subs are so much better… as a consequence, I didn’t watch the reaction video, when i actually love your reactions. Might seem snob and all, but i truly can’t stand any kind of dubbed movie.

One of my favorite movies. And Studio Ghibli is a true treasure. If you haven’t yet Nausicaa and Whisper of the Heart are as good as this (but be careful of the version of Nausicaa because the first dub was awful).
A note on her name. The Kanji for "Chi" is the same as the kanji for "Sen." So from "Chihiro" the first character is retained as "Sen." The kanji, pronounced either way, means "One thousand."
And yes…those triangular rice balls are good. But they are kind of Japanese fast food. Not amazing but satisfying.
And the music at the end just always makes me cry.

Many of Miazaki’s movies have an explicitly environmental message. I quite like that this has only the one.
It’s helpful to have some familiarity with the animism of Japanese religion and culture for a full appreciation of the genius of this story.

This movie is so magical to me and I loved it! Rumor has it that in Japan at a studio Ghibli museum you get to see an exclusive clip of Chiro sees Haku in her school.

Have you seen the anime "Hibike! Euphonium". It’s about the imaginary Rikka High School Band. They’re suppose to be a famous unbeatable marching band nicknamed "Light-Blue Devils". The anime is based off of a real life high school band, the Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Band, also known as the "Orange Devils". Recently it became very popular to react to the Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band, they are considered one of the top performing high school bands in the world, maybe you’ll like this to react to. https://youtu.be/toGxAWtWIM0

Why didn’t Kamjī keep Haku still when he was struggling; thrashing about, and hitting drawers with his tail? Kamajī was just standing there and watching. Because Chihiro was only keeping Haku’s jaws shut, he was free to thrash about with the rest of his body and make a mess. If only there were more people in the boiler room besides Chihiro; Haku, and Kamajī. They could’ve kept Haku still

She forgets everything at the end but keeps her growth, which was done on purpose to make the audience feel like they also once had an adventure with a long forgotten friend, who we will all eventually return to.

I worked on the special features for the Disney DVD release 15ish years ago.
The hopping lamp was Miyazaki’s nod to Pixar.
Try why I consider the definition of movie magic, My Neighbor Totoro. There are several mostly wordless scenes that I would describe as actual perfection. And the kids are voiced by a very, very young Dakota and Elle Fanning (or as the original transcriber of their interview wrote before I retranscribed the whole thing, "Alf Annings.")
