Why Megalo Box Is So Fun To Watch
Why Megalo Box Is So Fun To Watch
Megalo Box is an anime series made in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Ashita No Joe that’s taken the Spring 2018 Season by storm. From its art style to its characters to its story, it’s a series that, despite my lack of interest in, well any sport, I found myself getting obsessed with. And today, I want to talk about why it’s so fun to watch!

I totally agree with your discussion on the last few episodes. I felt the episode where Nanbu breaks away from the control of the underground bad people (not sure exactly what to call them) was a better climax for the series. Sure, Yuri removing his gear fell in line more with what his character has been built up to and makes sense when it comes to the themes of the show, but it made that final fight seem less believable and engaging. The underground bad group was also kind of the stakes. If team nowhere failed, there was punishment for failing in that Nanbu would lose his eye/life and the team would be forced to go back into hiding. This is lost when the underground group no longer poses a threat. The pressure to succeed doesn’t really exist in the last few episodes as a result.
I liked the motifs. I felt it was a stylistic decision that was kept consistent throughout and really added to the more character rivalry that the show relied on. Motifs were very clear, but I do have to agree it was a little overboard. I did like how they showed us Nanbu’s perspective after he lost his eye though. That was really cool.
My personal favorite of the season was Hisone to Masotan. It’s kinda hidden by Netflix’s brokenness which is really sad, but I think the genre is one of my favorites and felt a lot like "A Place Further than the Universe" but with fantasy elements that I tend to fall for really quickly. I just now realized you had a video on Hisone to Masotan. I’ll have to watch it tomorrow!

I’m surprised i wasn’t the only ones who found the fights uninteresting (or maybe i shouldn’t be) – – after speculating for a bit, i think that it comes from Joe (that’s right, i’m saying he’s a bad fighter!). Most of the time he’s in the ring you see em’ blocking punches, there’s a lot of slow deliberate build up narratively, but visually – – it’s a drag. I wish there was more gimicky / entertaining ways to go about the fights, a decent gimmick was the 3:07 giant person (idk their name 😛 ) It at least tried to build up some tension in "guessing where the punch was heading" (even if the execution wasn’t all to great). A better example was the gimmick of Mikio Shirato (red autoblock guy), where the tech & mentality starts to screw with em’. Making the ending thirds much more interesting, the: "best tactic to block is to not block" making him tempered enough to second doubt the tech he created. A big problem was also that "a lot of people just… fall" the way it’s structured makes it look like Joe’s always either blocking or hugging & when he eventually punches it either deals nothing or everything. idk maybe i’ll (or you’ll… or someone) will talk about how to create an interesting fight scene 😛
I think it was definitely a series worth watching (for reference i watched it all in one sitting) – but it wasn’t the "best", i definitely expected more build up, better fights (ironic, coming from a boxing anime) & less "in your face" storytelling / deeper interests into the character’s psyche / "why are the other’s doing it" (similar to the Aragaki one) or something that would make it better – – idk, again: story + choreography + motivation = ~good fight scene, something that most fights do 1 or maybe 2 out of the three ¯_(ツ)_/¯
also just quickly saying screw the timeskip there’s always timeskips & it frustrates my soul why do they do that i know there’s reasons but why must uuu do thaat show :< good video though *thumbs up *

The final fight was actually boring, anticlimathic and kind of oddly edited… the actual fight was less the focus of attention that the people around it
Do we really need that scene with Rich chick talking with the military just for telling them "the gear is not a weapon" only for the generals to shruggle and sign anyways
Although I do feel the effort Joe and Yuri were exausted after so many rounds I also kind of feel after so many rounds the people should grow tired… I surely did
And I feel actually cheated at the very end

I have a small suggestion, maybe you could say something like "Welcome back, those who skipped the spoilers" after you finish all the spoilers at the 10:37 timestamp, so people who did skip it know that everything is clear.
