Konohammaru wasn’t a waste of space. For being a complete support character he was literally one of the very very few children not a genin in the series. Now Hanabi was a fucking waste, she literally had less than a minute of show time.
His purpose was to show life as a normal (ninja) child in contrast to Naruto and establish that someone looks up to Naruto. I was Konohammaru growing up, in that I’m the youngest of 6 and being the youngest you just want to be involved and look to older siblings for help, guidance, and information. I don’t know too many children who didn’t try showing off.
I think he was a great filler of life. Konohammaru, Ichiraku. Aside from Sasuke, and Hinata in Konoha, no one had siblings. Maybe Sai but not really. The only team that was all family was Garaa, Temari and Konkoro. Seriously even the adults.
(Step) Konohammaru (brother), Ichiraku (uncle), Iruka (dad), Jiraya (grandad), and Tsunade (grandma), Kurama (pet) were Naruto family sorta.
