While the perfect getaway for most girls her age might be a fancy vacation with their loved ones, Rin Shima’s ideal way of spending her days off is camping alone at the base of Mount Fuji. From pitching her tent to gathering firewood, she has always done everything by herself, and has no plans of leaving her little solitary world.
However, what starts off as one of Rin’s usual camping sessions somehow ends up as a surprise get-together for two when the lost Nadeshiko Kagamihara is forced to take refuge at her campsite. Originally intending to see the picturesque view of Mount Fuji for herself, Nadeshiko’s plans are disrupted when she ends up falling asleep partway to her destination. Alone and with no other choice, she seeks help from the only other person nearby. Despite their hasty introductions, the two girls nevertheless enjoy the chilly night together, eating ramen and conversing while the campfire keeps them warm. And even after Nadeshiko’s sister finally picks her up later that night, both girls silently ponder the possibility of another camping trip together.

I’ve been camping and backpacking for a while now. I rather enjoyed the accuracy and detail to gear. I guess it’s different from camper to camper but the gear used for simple campground camping was a bit much. Yeah get a Coleman or something good. But a lot of the gear is a bit unnecessary unless you backpacking because that shit expensive. But I really enjoyed the background. Just like real camping. The best thing this show taught me was that i can expand my food options.

I also really like the scene with the older sister sitting by the lake. It makes me wonder what she’s thinking. Does she have a frantic, stressful life and this is a moment she needs? What’s she thinking when she looks at the lake? Does she wonder about her sister? Could this be the start of an interest in being in nature for her as well? Does she have nothing going on, which is why she’s always available for her little sister, and this is a moment for her to think about her direction or lack of one? I don’t need to know the answers. The anime lets me ask the questions. It’s a little space to think about the relationship with our lives and a quiet lake. Leaving space for stories like this with no answer provided can actually open things up for the viewer. One reason many love Yuru Camp is they can see themselves in Rin, a sort of character not often allowed to exist in action-packed stories. If we have her start talking to Nadeshiko about troubles at home, her relationship with her grandfather, her fears of being mediocre at school, her concern about her gambling father… then the story actually becomes more narrow and quite different. The story could easily be about a girl dealing with a stressful family life by getting out, rather than about our relationship with friends, nature, and independence — which is what’s wonderful about it as is.

This show is my new favorite, simply because it got me to stop moving, just sit down, and watch it! It had so many cute things vying for my attention left and right, it was a wonderful experience!

yuru camp is the only anime i could ever take more than the first 3 episodes of, without cringing my head into my chest. maby it’s because of my love for camping, but i really enjoyed the focus of the series. i actually only wish they would have gone more into depth with camping, like with multy day trips, and their challanges.

I dont get why being an educational entertaining anime is wrong, especielly a niche theme like camping.

My favorite attention to detail is the 2 main cars in the series. Both the Nissan Rasheen and the Suzuki Hustler are 4WD vehicles marketed towards adventurers, perfect for camping.
If they ever make another season, I hope to see a Suzuki Jimny.

I definitely agree with your gripe with the manga’s line shading. It’s like they’re behind jail bars somehow.

As my first anime this will always be my favourite. You sir, have a new sub
I.e i think the series had the characters vessels for camping is the point like you said, but because its trying to avoid drama and stay mellow, to fit the presentation of the show

Will you be doing one on Violet Evergarden too? It’s animation did scare be a bit at first, but I soon realized I’m inlove with with the story and now it’s my second favourite, and I’m curious to hear what you think of it – I remember you saying that you’re afraid it could end up being boring. And it’s so good to have you beck!

Excellent video man, so glad I could be a part of this. I like that you examined the flaws as well as the praises and talked about how even those elements coalesce together to create something genuine, because that’s how I feel about a lot of my favorite media.
