Everybody should know once and for all that the Russian word or hell any Slavic word for "Light" is свет (Svet).

There is also another mistake in the movie that you didnt notice. There is no language that is called ‘celtic’ yes there are the celtic people but they all spoke a common type of Gaelic. So that is a mistake the movie made as Well.

The writer and artist of the Death Note manga saying the adaptation isn’t bad really doesn’t tell you anything. Even Toriyama didn’t really criticize Dragon Ball Evolution. No matter how bad an adaptation is, the mangaka tend to be very diplomatic and polite about it.

I know that it may sound weird but I kind of liked Deathnote as a sort of modern day Heathers. I think that means it failed at what it was trying to do though.

The villain at the heart of Death Note is the evil in the human heart.
I recall a proverb that says, within each person battles a good dog and a bad dog. The one that wins will be the one you feed. (It might have been in Avatar)
Exercising the power to kill over and over and over again is feeding the bad dog.

This film fails on a major fudemedatal level, being how people die by the death note. The reason the manga/anime worked was because the death note had a main signature to how people died (heart attack). So when people various died around the same time with a heart attack it lead people to be suspicious and full blown investigation to be carried out even though details weren’t fully clear.
The film people die as result of various accidents that always diffrent and unique via the death note, its make no sense they would tie to a person. Other than they have to be because the plot needs move forward happen similar to the source material. Bad writing.

30:59, To be fair, that was one of the most hilarious scenes in the movie. It totally encapsulates everything wrong with this adaptation and everyone involved is somehow still surprised by it.

Wait, what? A terrorist took himself and his cohort out with a grenade? That contradicts the rules of Death Note! If the death of the person the way it’s written leads to other people’s deaths, the cause of death will switch to a heart attack instead.
Edit: The fuck? Burning the page saves someone’s life? That’s against the rules also! The writing is permanent.

If I found a book like the Death Note, the first thing I’d do is burn it.
I don’t trust anyone with that sort of power, least of all myself.

She watched the movie and came stomping out of her room yelling "that was so bad I could scream " ?

I’ve been speaking Russian since the age of 4 and "Kira" doesn’t mean light( light is usually "svet" but there are some others ) there isn’t even a word "Kira" in Russian.

Don’t know if the older forms of the language from the time when the Celts were dominant was majorly different but at least in Irish/Gaelge Light is not Kira. Heck we don’t even have the letter k in Irish. Our word is Solas.

I wonder if there is a rule in the death note about fictional characters. Like if the death note was real in our world and we could kill off some anime characters, literature characters, or any other genre of character we despised, that we could kill them off. That would be quite interesting.

One kinda important distinction. You mention that Manga/Anime Light doesn’t have somebody else kill L because of his arrogance, but that is only partially correct. The Death Note explicitly states that ONLY the person who’s name is written can be killed and cannot cause the deaths of others. Light didn’t know L’s name, so he couldn’t kill L indirectly through that manner. The main reason he didn’t outright kill L himself is because his death would only bring more suspicion on him.
However, the rules in the movie are ill-defined, so there really isn’t anything stopping Movie Light from doing just that…

8:53 Ah yes, the ‘detention room.’
Unless that’s a thing in other High Schools? The idea you wouldn’t just reuse a room is funny to me. But, now that I think about why this is here, it’s to tell the audience "hey, remember how Light got detention in the last scene? He’s in detention this scene after the scene where we’re told he’s in trouble."
15:10 And thus, many doujins were rendered noncanon.
15:40 So, here’s something I wished we would see in these types of situation, and that would be the character immediately asking: "wait, their full name? Is a middle name required? How old can a picture of their face be for me to use it?" Now, even if this movie actually did respect the rules, I wouldn’t expect it to dive so deep into these issues. That reminds me, how many pages are in the Death Note?

I thought the movie was good on it’s own, but looking at it as an adaptation from the perspective of a die hard death note fan, I was dIsgUsteD. It left out so many great aspects from the anime, which is understandable since it can only fit so much in 2 hours, but it still didnt have the same punch. One of the main problems I had with it was how much they changed the characters’ personalities 🙁

Actually Kira derived STRAIGHT from "killer" but as there are no Ls in the Japanese alphabet (smart name for L if you think of it like that), it was his region/country that were mispronouncing the name, as Light says to Ryuk in the manga and anime.

I love Death Note, both the manga and the anime, they are both very clever and can spark some very good moral debates over what is going too far in the pursuit of justice because while you can say that Light has no right to choose who lives and who dies, you can’t ignore the fact that many of the very dangerous criminals he killed got away with their crimes and were able to find a way to never face justice. But while the movie is not good at all, it is not as rage inducing as Dragonball Evolution. I was annoyed that Light was made into a bit of a coward when a genius who can be quite cold and calculating in his quest to rid the world of evil and become a new god, in fact that is why him and L are such great characters in the manga and anime. I just loathed Mia, mainly because I may be one of the few people to say this, but I actually liked Misa, she reminded me of a less intelligent Harley Quinn and it is understandable why she fell for him since Light had killed the man who killed her family since he was one of the criminals that never saw justice. It also made sense for Light to manipulate her and use her because she made the deal to get Shinigami Eyes which allowed the person using the Death Note to learn the name of any person by just looking at them and Light wanted to use her to find out what L’s real name was. The only reason why Mia seems to be around was because she seems to have a death fetish as you put it and Light is horny for her. Willem Dafoe as Ryuk was brilliant especially when you realize that he didn’t really know the source material and made up the voice on his own since that is a very good voice for Ryuk. While some of the actions of this version of L didn’t make any sense to me, I still greatly enjoyed Lakeith Stanfield’s portrayal of him, he was at least a lot closer to the character he was portraying than Light was. I especially didn’t like that they gave the darker traits of Light to Mia as if they were trying to make Light less morally ambiguous and make him a lot more heroic. But I can at least say that they tried to stay close to the source material even if they made changes that didn’t make any sense at all especially if you know the actual source material unlike with the people who made Dragonball Evolution who just seemed to wipe their ass with the source material and make their own stupid story while only taking the names of the characters and very minuscule things from the source material. Also interesting bit of trivia, the young man who was Light in the Japanese live action version was Shuya Nanahara in the cult classic Battle Royale.
