Summary:
Starlight is a song and dance revue troupe loved throughout the world. Karen and Hikari make a promise with each other when they’re young that one day they’ll stand on that stage together. Time passes, and now the girls are 16 years old. Karen is very enthusiastic about the lessons she takes every day, holding her promise close to her heart. Hikari has transferred schools and is now away from Karen. But the cogs of fate turn, and the two are destined to meet again. The girls and other Stage Girls will compete in a mysterious audition process to gain acceptance into the revue.

I have this anime very high before the season started because it’s Kinema Citrus and I knew there is a musical planned for it already (I assume they can’t afford to fuck this up).
The first episode still exceed my expectation.

I thought this series is about girls training for theater acting but it turned out to be a battle royale.

Glad I saw the PV of this a week ago or so, because the description didnt even hint at anything like what the series actually is.. It went from nothing special to a must watch..

There’s a lot of details that are fun to notice upon a rewatch with the context of knowing what is going on – like how in the scene with Nana, Claudine and Maya they talk about how this time one of villains from last time will play one of the lead roles or how they refer to Hikari as new rival.
And yeah Furukawa worked with Ikuhara on Penguindrum and co-directed Yuri Kuma Arashi with him. One of art directors, Kentaro Akiyama also had heavy involvement with Penguindrum. Sound Director is from Penguindrum too. Not to mention that production staff seems to include Kinema Citrus top animators like Takushi Koide, music composers like Tatsuya Kato, who scored Prisma Illya and Soma and Yoshiaki Fujisawa who scored Houseki No Kuni. And Studio Pablo are handling background art so that’s why the landscapes look so beautiful. The cast is STACKED with talent. And unlike last season’s ikuhara-protege-run-project tada-kun, this actually delivers.
This is certainly shaping up into being a show that NOBODY should miss this season.

If you’re a fan of Revolutionary Girl Utena, this is an instant MUST WATCH. Best episode 1 of the season for me
