If anyone still has no idea what Kinema Citrus is, they should know by now. The production quality is excellent, and highly probably will be consistent throughout the season.
The giraffe may seem random but in earlier years, in those ikubara shows, Mawaru Penguindrum/Yuri Kuma Arashi (as people may have mentioned) both had a mascot-like role animal with interactions to certain extents with the characters. It’s said that people are still arguing to this day whether those animals literally existed in the stories or just put there for symbolism use.
And yeah I agree, this got to be one of the most epic "transformation" scene I’ve ever watched, even beyond those in any mahou shoujo shows.
However, I’m not sure about the Ikubara-influenced stylizing. It can go either ways. It can screw things up and make the plot 100x harder to comprehend than necessary and the series turns to be a pile of completely pretentious shit by the end of it, OR it can be a great show with magnificent production quality, music, character and story telling. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
When I watched the PV I didn’t even think I would watch the series at all, and now I’m impatiently waiting for the second episode while rewatching the last part because it was so good.
AOTY? Too early to judge. AOTM? Going strong imho. (That is if the whole series is as awesome as episode 1. How many times have I recommended a "good first episode" show to somebody and ended up embarrassing myself, oh my!)

I think the one show that very relevant for this series that hasn’t been mentioned yet in the comment section is Revolutionary Girl Utena. The director (if I am not mistaken) is a protegee of Ikuhara (the director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Mawaru Penguindrum, and Yuri Kuma Arashi) and there are so many obvious inspiration from Utena.

The show begin with normal school life then turn in to a surreal event? Check
An invitation to duel place? Check
An elevator to reach the duel place? Check
A special type of fighter? Check (Duelist in Utena, Theater Girl in Revue Starlight)
An item that needs to be destroyed in order to win? Check (Rose in Utena, Pin that hold the cloak in Revue Starlight)
A special thing that every fighter fighting for? Check (Power to Revolutionize the World in Utena, Tiara in Revue Starlight)

So yeah, at least from visual cue, this is the Utena of our time. As such, I don’t think anybody will die, but I hope it will be similar to Utena in the sense that every character comes out better (they solve their personal issues and become a healthier person in body and soul) after each duel.

Though would it thematically similar to Utena? I think it remains to be seen.

"Everything about this screams quality and, a ton of work hours"

LMAO true. At least, the art, character designs, outfits, storyboarding, etc. are all so cool, that I imagine the animators at least had a lot of fun and were possibly more into animating this show than others.

I was surprised (though not really, because it looks so good) when I realized the trailers were released over a year ago. That means production started, the actual animating of the episodes and such, ~1.5 years ago, or perhaps even longer.

Most anime these days only expect to have half a year per cour before they start airing episodes, often times even less. But this anime seems to have had over a year just for 12 episodes! (Traditionally you’re supposed to have 1-2 years for ~12 episodes, so this is great!)

Everything looked great, enjoyed the review too!

The only reason the giraffe didn’t completely surprise me was due the picture of the giraffe on Junna’s phone when she gets a phone call in the middle of the episode. I also noticed that this show seems to be taking some vague inspiration from madoka magica sometimes which to me is a mixture of good and possibly not so good. If you haven’t seen madoka magica it may be a show you want to check out too.

I think it’s worth noting that the two series that the director for this has had the most involvement with prior are Mawaru Penguindrum and Yuri Kuma Arashi.
