The point Levi was making in court was "You are afraid of him and you are most likely not skilled enough to kill him. But I AM skilled enough to kill him and I can even keep him under my control". Then the judge was better able to trust Levi could keep Eren on a leash.
Also, Levi is actually great as a person. When they introduced him they showed how much he cared for his comrades, and we will see more of that throughout the series.

Not only does Levi want Eren as an ally like you pointed out, but he wanted to show to everyone he has control over Eren. If Eren were to transform uncontrollably for some reason, then Levi would step in and keep everyone safe because he’s (slight spoiler but you probably know this) INSANELY overpowered.

If you go back to ep3 (or 2, I don’t exactly remember) to the scene after he falls off the maneuvering gear and hurts his head, you can see smoke coming off his head – like the smoke that comes when titans are healing!
Isayama is a master at foreshadowing. So be sure to question anything and everything that seem even slightly out of place. But, this also makes the small inconsistencies that the anime added (mostly the dub, the sub has only a couple of problems) all the more annoying. For any other anime, small changes to the dialog or scene during adaptation generally doesn’t hurt. But it matters so much in AOT.
