Amazing fact it will blow you mind the girl named kaya at the start of the movie is actually ashikata fiance who gave him the locket. Also it is completely confirmed that she was pregnant with his kid. And his descendent from her passed down his legend. The movie name was first supposed to be legend of ashikata. That is why he has more screen time then monoke. You can even check the wiki fandom of girl name kaya it is real. The japanese women hated his character for him being a cheater. He was shown as brother to her for the western audience. Go check the fandom page of girl named kaya.

The people covered in bandages that made the guns at the ironworks are lepers, they mentioned Lady Eboshi washing their rotting flesh and bandaging them, they live isolated from everyone else because it’s contagious, but Lady Eboshi didn’t care and still visited them, gave them work, food and treated them well, that’s why they’re so grateful to her, anyone else would have left them to die.
Also Ashitaka was exiled, he cut his top knot and left the Emishi village to cure his curse, so he can’t go back, that’s also why his family and the elders couldn’t go see him off (Oracle says "the Law forbids us to see you go"). Kaya didn’t care though, she gave him the dagger and everything. Speaking of the dagger, it isn’t really clear because the blade is so small but when San and Ashitaka argued before hugging she stabbed him with it.
Little extra fact, Mononoke means "vengeful spirit" so that’s why the people called her that, the Princess title was because she was the daughter of Moro, one of the rulers of the forest. The name her mother and brothers called her "San" means three, she was named that because she was the third pup of Moro, so we can assume her brothers’ names are Ichi and Ni (one and two, respectively), although it’s never mentioned in the movie

Ashitaka will never return to his home village because he was not allowed to.
He was actually ousted from the community because of the curse he had got.
That is why Kaya (the girl who gave the crystal dagger to him) got to see him off even that was forbidden.
They had been an engaged couple (this is officially mentioned) and both understood it was the last farewell.
The crystal dagger was a symbol of prayer for precious, I think.
In Irontown, the gun making workers seemed to suffer some disease.
They are thought to be leper, patient with Hansen’s disease.
They have similarity in the sense of "kegare", Japanese old religious concept of uncleanness and defilement.
Not only them, most of the characters in this movie are abandoned people.
Also Eboshi has severe backstory (not depicted in the movie tho, it’s referred in official books).
But they don’t give up to live, and the story doesn’t deny their lives.
Killing Deer God is a metaphor of modernization.
Human must face the problem of balancing between our wealth and respect for nature (other lives) all the lifetime.
Not a simple happy end but I love it.
