I’ve always thought that this film’s divergence from typical Miyazaki fare is exactly what makes it such a great gateway film for American audiences. It allows people to see the greatness and imagination of Miyazaki without being confused by pacing and writing that American audiences aren’t as attuned to. Mononoke is, among other things, a fantastically paced action-adventure more akin to the sort of action films that American audiences are so used to and so in love with.

This movie has all of the themes that the Lorax should have but didn’t.
