Just behind Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke is my second favorite Ghibli film. Also this was a big moment for anime as it hit more mainstream culture than it had previously due to wide theatrical release, though I could be incorrect on this statement. I’ve never really heard many people talk about how similar this is to Nausicaa.

The violence in this film was one of my favorite parts. It was styalized, but it wasn’t what the characters focused on as the most important thing about some of the people in this movie. They may have been a brave warrior, but the warrior supported being brave and just added to the traits as if it were any other thing. Most movies nowadays focus on the unbeatable character in combat while this one was more about the leader or the brave soul that was adept at fighting. One of my favorite character pieces that explored characters as they were without the need of a huge 180 swing in their character development like some Disney and pixar films these days.

This was my first film of Hayao Miyazaki’s that I’ve seen, and it left me speechless with it’s beautiful animation, story, and characters. I remember my Dad came over to my room to see what I was watching. Then he sat down, and started watching it with me. : ) Hayao Miyazaki’s movies really do have something that appeal to all ages.

Yes this movie was deep and mature while at the same time entertaining and up lifting. I grew up in a different era when Walt Disney animations were king. And rightly so because Disney put out great stuff. But Princes Mononoke is a cut above even Disney’s best. The more I think about it the safer it seems to say Princess Mononoke is the best animated movie yet made.

For some reason, I didn’t get too much into this film, even though I love the few other studio ghibli films I’ve seen. I just kind of found it boring and uneventful, though I did get the themes of industrialisation and nature to some extent. As always with Studio Ghibli, I loved the art. I only saw it once years ago, so I may watch it again sometime.

I have Mononoke Hime on LD (laser disc), but never got to play it, simply because I don’t have an LD player. I guess it wasn’t a good idea asking a friend to bring me that from Japan at all :-/

But I’ve managed to watch it on TV, a few years later 😀

This is definitely my favorite Ghibli film! Probably extremely high on my list of favorite anime movies in general (though I can’t pick out a hard number at the moment). Wish I could have watched it on theatres way back when, but VHS sufficed and boy did I wear out that tape.

Also you gotta love Haiyo’s trash-talking of modern anime culture, haha.

Great video, I agree, Princess Mononoke is the best Miyazaki film, though i haven;t seen them all of course. I watched this first time when i was living in Japan but it’s one i always go back to, because it really delves into a very believable Japanese mythology. It was also the first Miyazaki movie i could actually enjoy watching with English dub rather than with Japanese subs. They did a really good job of the English dub, Minnie Driver did Lady Eboshi so well…

Miyazaki has only made one good film, Kiki’s delivery service. It’s the only film he’s created that didn’t come off as if it was written by a child. He’s one of the most boring directors of Japanse animation. His animation quality just doesn’t make up for his terribly boring and uninteresting writing and characters, not to mention Mononoke is by far the least appealing to the eye of any of his films.

Excellent choice!  I can see why you hold it so dearly.  The moral appealed to me too… about the dangers of modernization/industrialization against nature.  But also that "some" advances are beneficial, and necessary, if not taken too far.  And that resentment (hate) on both sides will only lead to further suffering.  It’s an issue that hits me deep inside as well.
