After seeing the movie… Go back and watch the last two episodes, and they will make a lot more sense. There are even little glimpses of Misato and the NERV crew dead, mirroring what happened in the movie.

One of my all time favorite movies. I actually think you can view the movie and the final two episodes as two sides of the same coin, rather than one being a replacement for the other. The two final episodes of course providing a more internal perspective and the film giving the external look. Both have the same message, though, and upon analysis one can see that the point is quite positive.

Shinji finally comes to the point where, despite being given an opportunity to enter a "world" where all are one and the risk for being hurt mentally is eliminated, he rejects it. Shinji’s whole character arc is being a person who’s already troubled and only faces more hardship as time goes on.
However, by the end of the series/movie, when he has the option of leaving that reality, he chooses instead to try to live, and strive for human connection, even with the chance that he may get hurt emotionally. He appreciates what’s real and his story comes full circle. On a macro level, humanity "survives" this too.
Shinji’s mother in her soul form tells him that all humans who wish to do so can come back from the instrumentality project. Asuka is the first example of this happening.
On top of that, the Evas, including the mass production units, are destroyed/dead and the false Lances of Longinus are destroyed. The only one remaining is the real one and it’s in space with Eva Unit 01, a testament to mankind.
With that being the case, along with the Angels now being gone, humanity will emerge likely more resilient, unified and free of the major threats from the past 16 years. It’s a brilliant finale, both for Shinji’s character and the macro scale of humanity.

The movie does not replace the last two episodes of the series. This is simply showing what was happening in the real world when episodes 25 and 26 were showing what was happening in Shinji’s mind. The ending is the exact same when Shinji chooses living.

The movie disturbed and scared Austin so bad that the rest of his video had uncontrollable shaking during the ladder half!

I love that we’re living in a day and age where anime (and pretty much anything else) is becoming more and more "socially acceptable" to watch.

The imagery still stunning today. Even though the plot takes a lot of from older classics like Ideon and, you guess it, Devilman. However, the whole thing does not make any sense at all, especially when you take a step back and look at the overall picture, not to mention the prolong monologue. If you do not understand, don’t force yourself, go with the flow and enjoy. Honestly I still do not understand what is going on after all these years. Anyway, do a spoiler review if you have the time.

Austin you’re missing one greatest anime of our lifetime and that is ATTACK ON TITAN. Please watch all the 3 Seasons following upto now. Review it someday if you can. Also I highly recommend you to watch in original sub too.

Hey Austin, "End of Evangelion" is a misleading title. The saga isn’t finished yet. I bet you my yogurt covered right hand that 3.0+1.0 will finally acknowledge that Rebuild is a sequel, and the end result of Shinji resetting the world after EoE.

It was also kinda a giant ‘fuck you’ to fans who harressed him (Hideaki Anno) and the staff and sent them death threats after the end of the series. It was him going ‘Oh you’re not satisfied with the series ending? You want to know what REALLY happened? Well here you go, enjoy.’

The mythology of the show is actually based on 2001 and the show has several nods to it.

I never really comment on YouTube but I have to say Austin that you are one of my favorite reviewers on here. Your reviews give off this vibe of just talking to a friend who is level headed and objective but fanatical about movies. This is why I do take your critique seriously, even when I disagree. Seeing you review and give EoE a near perfect score is awesome! It sort of feels like showing a buddy a precious gem of a movie and them just falling into place with what you think of it. This is seriously like my third favorite movie (After 2001 and Akira). So cool man and I’m hoping one day you make old school reviews and get to talk about both of these movies also.

I think you would enjoy the Berserk trilogy of films that’s on Netflix. The manga is the best dark fantasy story ever written. It deals with causility, justice, sacrifice and how far you are willing to go for your dream.
