"The same scene in Re:Zero!" Yes, I noticed that, too. Of course, what this means is that Re:Zero is imitating Evangelion… Because the "unfamiliar ceiling" scene (in which Shinji expresses sadness for not being home, and for the prospect of never ever being home again) is very famous, and has been imitated in countless scenes in other animēs. And there is the influence of NGE on the whole of animē for you…

Admittedly I stuck to the dub when I watched this because I knew the series gets really philosophical/trippy. And it’s (idk about you) easier to follow/think about such stuff while watching and listening in a language you’re fluent in, rather than reading said philosophical stuff in fragments while also watching and listening (because even though we don’t understand japanese, we do still listen to characters for tone/emotion).
    That’s why/what I did.

Imagine being a 90’s kid, consuming all the anime your tv provided (because other than on tv, you had to buy the series in videocasettes), and almost all the series were so unique, and suddenly appears this 1995 anime, with only 26 episodes (animes lasted for more than 50 episodes), a catching OST, psychological, philosophical and religious elements, and an animation quality only seen in anime movies or OVA’s. Only cowboy bebop and rurouni kenshin (both from 1998) could compare to this jewel, but evangelion was by far more influencial for some of us. After every episode you dedicated hours to introspection lol

    October 19, 2018 @ 7:48 am

I’ve watched a lot of the other evangelion reaction series’ on youtube, and yours is by far the best! You’re already picking up a lot of the small details. I originally saw the couple videos you uploaded to your other channel, and I’m just catching up now that your channel is back. Thanks for making these, and I really hope you finish this series and watch the movie!

I like those little details that you notice and your perception on Shinji’s character. He is a different main character, not the typical one. It’s funny that you pointed out the reference on Attack on Titan ‘cuz the first time I watched it, it remains me Evangelion. I hope you don’t get copy right for this anime. I used to watch the episodes here and now, most of them are gone.

In Episode 2, we see that NGE is not simply about fighting monstruous aliens… Think about how this episode was constructed. First we have the beginning of the battle with Sachiel (the monstrious angel from the first episode), but only up to when Shinji is in a bad spot — we don’t see how it ends. Then suddenly Shinji wakes up in hospital, and we get his famous "unfamiliar ceiling" scene (= I’m not home; this is not home; I am alone…). Then we get a series of (somewhat comedic) events leading to Misato having Shinji live in her house — and we (again comically) get to see what a laid-back slob she is (a refrigerator full of beer?…) After that… we finally get to see the battle with Sachiel (the angel) as a flashback (Shinji’s memories), and we see how painful and traumatic it was for Shinji (he and the EVA going berserk together…). At the end, after her shower, Misato goes into Shinji’s room to give him a few words of praise. He hears… but his face doesn’t change. MIsato’s effort is in vain.

Do you see how this particular choice of narrative order makes everything seem even more impactful? We’re right there with Shinji; we don’t see the battle when it happened in the same way that a traumatized person can block a memory; then we see some ‘normal’, ‘comedic’, ‘haha’ stuff… and then we go back to the trauma. The trauma… is there. It’s not leaving. It is that hard, and it hurts that much. That’s the way it is.

I’m interested to see your reactions throughout the whole series, is that something you’re thinking of doing?
Neon Genesis is one of those quintessential pieces of art I love for so many reasons, and have watched so much of, that the most enjoyable thing I can do is see someone seeing it, and trying to comprehend it for the first time.
The thing that makes Neon Genesis perfect for this is that you wont fully understand everything until the end, and yet will be more confused than you have ever been. I want to see those moments!

On the Yebisu beer: "100% brewed and packaged in Japan". It’s an IRL brand that disappears from the show later because Gainax didn’t get permission to use them.

"I thought he was inside a gigantic robot". I think someone said in Episode 1 that the EVAs were "a life form". They have mechanical components (the entry plug, the machinery Shinji uses to control it), but they’re basically living beings.
