A new and extremely bizarre Angel, Leliel, appears in the sky over Tokyo-3, apparently a black and white sphere. All three Evangelions move in to attack, but Shinji’s attack is useless, and he along with Unit 01 are absorbed into a growing shadow that has engulfed the city. Ritsuko determines that Leliel exists on a higher dimension of existence, which can only be explained by mathematical concepts. The shadow on the ground, described as being 600 meters wide but only three nanometers thick, is the actual body of the Angel, and the sphere in the sky is its true shadow. Fearing that Unit 01 has been completely lost, NERV prepares to drop all of its remaining N² bombs into the Angel, hoping that this will destroy Leliel even though it could easily kill Shinji as well. While trapped in Leliel, Shinji goes on an introspective mental journey. As the battery power completely drains and life support runs out in Unit 01, Shinji suddenly feels a ghostly woman embracing him, and he realizes that she is his mother. Outside Leliel, Misato and Ritsuko witness Unit 01 violently tear its way out of Leliel’s shadow, thereby killing the Angel. Shinji is recovered alive and well, but his experiences inside the Angel have left him deeply unsettled.

I love how this anime goes deep into the emotions of the characters, as if they were real people. Asuka wants to be strong but she certainly has feelings for Shinji. Great episode!

Glad you enjoyed this one so much, some people don’t like the sudden introspective of Shinji inside the Angel. You can clearly see where the saved animationbudged from episode 15 went. This is the biggest advantage of moving away from the Monster of the week style of show, you can focus your animation on the episodes with the action. Rei’s confrontation with Asuka is probably one of my favorite shots of the show, with the stark contrast of their eye- and haircolors in the darkness.
I just always wanted to see more of the professional, tactical combat within the city that we got to see in this episode. I like that a bit more than having a new crazy Misatoplan with 0.00001% success rate that saves the day every other week. We will get neither from now on, I can spoil you that much.
Not to much I can add to the characters in this episode, you picked up all of the important points yourself. Did you notice how Asuka tryed to talk shit about Shinji when she was alone with Rei in the changing room? A nice parallel to the spider-angel, when she did the same with Shinji because Rei was doing better than her. And just like Shinji, Rei does not play her stupid games. Same with her little speach about how it’s all his fault because he stormed forward, and how stupid he is. Of course she is worried and feels like its a bit her fault because she provoced him. And of course she wants Rei or Misato to say that she is right. And Rei not even acknowledging her monologue and instead questioning her reasons for piloting is pretty much the worst, most painfull thing she could do to Asuka in this situation. It shows that she might be able to fool Shinji and Misato, but Rei looks right through her. Rei has a much better understanding of the characters around her than it seems. And Rei is pissed because Asuka is a bitch, showing some urgency to her character, some own motivations that she lacked for the most part of the story.
This new rivalry complicates the relationship of Asuka and Shinji of course, now we have someone she likes, but he is also the number 1 threat to her ego. This sparks one of the biggest and longest going discussions of the Eva fandom: Does Asuka truly like Shinji, or does she hate him because he is better? Yes Mr. Freud, I will take Ambivalence for 100 please.
The one important thing you did not pick up in this episode was a hint to Rei’s character. The first one was last episode, this time it was a little bit more on the nose and the next ones will be even more obvious. It’s always funny to see how many of the hints people see, or don’t see, on their first time.
Overall, can’t say a lot about this one, minor hints to the story, some slow moving events beginn to unfold but nothing to talk about at this point in the plot.
Just a very solid episode that stands on its own through characterdevelopement with a little bit of action and story sprinkled in between. Definitly in the top 33% of the episodes for me.
Edit: Almost forgot to say it, I enjoyed hearing your own thoughts at the start of the video like always. Maybe you can small video after you are done with the show and have figured out everything. That is, if you feel like you have something important to add after the end. I always like "afterthoughts" or however you call that type of video.
