Japanese has 3 written languages: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
Hiragana and Katakana each have a similar number of characters to the roman alphabet. You can learn them pretty quickly.
Kanji has about 4000 commonly used characters. Japanese students are still learning it well through middle school.

I guess the main point of Magma Diver is to show that Asuka can be a bad-ass too, without anyone’s help — that she has the talent to pilot an EVA. Many other things happen around this main point, but that’s the take-home lesson I took from watching it the first time…
