In the year 2015, the world stands on the brink of destruction. Humanity’s last hope lies in the hands of Nerv, a special agency under the United Nations, and their Evangelions, giant machines capable of defeating the Angels who herald Earth’s ruin. Gendou Ikari, head of the organization, seeks compatible pilots who can synchronize with the Evangelions and realize their true potential. Aiding in this defensive endeavor are talented personnel Misato Katsuragi, Head of Tactical Operations, and Ritsuko Akagi, Chief Scientist.
Face to face with his father for the first time in years, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari’s average life is irreversibly changed when he is whisked away into the depths of Nerv, and into a harrowing new destiny—he must become the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01 with the fate of mankind on his shoulders.
Written by Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a heroic tale of a young boy who will become a legend. But as this psychological drama unfolds, ancient secrets beneath the big picture begin to bubble to the surface…

Honestly the shot of Kaworu being held by Unit 01 is one of my favorites in the series.
While on some level it’s clear that was done because of restriction, but it really puts you in Shinji’s shoes during the most intense desicion in the series.
While other people on youtube go way more into it, but Evangelion didn’t really run out of budget at the end. While they lost some of their funding, just as big of an issue was the staff not having enough time to finish. This was made worse near the end as an episode had to be canceled due to the sarin gas attack being too similar, which made the staff an episode behind.

Something when you mean masterpiece you should mean influence on the popular series that part of anime’s history .Saying something is a masterpiece is pointless since most people say the series has flaws

Evangelion, such a masterpiece that by the scene of Kaworu being held by Unit 01 i wasn’t sure if they were just trolling or if it had a much deeper meaning…but i forgot all that because they just slapped Beethoven’s Ode of Joy into a still image (before the scene finale, that could only be thought by a genius or a troll) and it made me appreciate classical music (and life) in a complete different way!…and i can only thank them for that =)
